Hi! A while back I decided to try and see if I could replicate the classic Movie-era warp effect in 3DSMax 2022. The tricky part, at least to me, was the challenge myself to do all the VFX in a single pass, using a single camera, with the only post effects being color correction and a small amount of lens distortion. I also wanted to see if I could attempt the subtle pearlescent paint job with any sort of success.
Here's the result!
I actually sort of ended up mixing the warp effects from TMP, TWoK, TSFS, and TUC...into a semi-cohesive whole? I'm pretty happy with the results, in any case.
The model was loaned to me by the excellent Diogo Vincenzi: https://www.artstation.com/diogovincenzi
I made some minor tweaks to the model and materials/textures to accomplish my pass at this.
This is rendered in 3DSMax 2022.2, using VRay Next Ver5 GPU. I'm using dual TITAN RTXs in one box, and a 3090 RTX in the other.. Render times between 16s and 3m44s per frame, with about .25s-.5s for post effects application per frame. It's 340 frames long at 24fps. Post in After Effects, using Sapphire by BorisFX for the lens flares, and Red Giant Looks for the color correction and lens distortion.
Anyhow, I hope you enjoy it!
