USS Enterprise BUDK-1701

Starlock

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Looky what turned up on the cover of the latest BudK catalog. Photoshop ahoy!

This alternate version of the Enterprise should be quite familiar to the forum from its previous appearance in a "Ships of The Line" calendar as well as a previous thread with the artist. (Methinks he got some 'splainin' to do Lucy...)

BUT - It's being used to sell the ***TOY*** of the Star Trek Movie Enterprise - and not for Nemo's Pointy Stick of Doom™ (Dammit!).

(I wish I could have gotten a better scan - but I had to alter the image a little so the floating heads would show up.)

FYI thats not the abramsprise, thats Gabe Koerner's version!

And if I didn't know that already I'd have had to hand in my TrekBBS card before I even started this thread, n'est-ce pas? :rommie:

Now I'm wondering if the image was used with permission since I cannot find any credits or reference. It also appears on the the main website page section for ordering catalogs.

Yeah, this sucks. When I got my copy in the mail I thought "cool, they're sellin Gabe's 'E', then I looked inside, Ugh!

If memory serves, Paramount owns the image and design, since it was used in the SOTL calendar.

They probably used it because the JJprise looks like crap.

All - As it happens, I live about 20 minutes away from the Bud-K headquarters. The reason Star Trek art is on the cover is to advertise the fact that customers can buy the Enterprise from them. Incidentally, while Bud-K makes its own knives (and REALLY good ones at that), a quick look at the catalog shows that it also sells other movie/TV - Serenity, Lord of the Rings, etc.

I have asked someone in the company a follow up question regarding how Bud-K was able to use the image on the cover in the first place. My guess is that either (1) Paramount granted permission in an effort to boost sales or (2) the agreement between the manufacturer and Paramount included "trickle down" rights to distributors/sellers to use some imagery (albeit limited), again in an effort to boost sales.

Hopefully I will find out more shortly.

Starlock - By any chance are you on the Playtrekker list? I only ask as this came up on the digest I read.

My god! Is there no one left with any scruples? Theft and mislabeling is the natural way of some people... disgusting. I can't wait till we invent the brain cap and filter these people out of society... :brickwall:

I feel bad for Gabe. At this point he should be very rich from that model.

Crap. Beat me to it. They are a good bunch of people and really have their ear to the ground when it comes to availability of toys/collectibles (where available in their area, expected dates of availability, etc.). It is also a great place to trade and find rare collectibles out of the country (e.g., there was a water bottle you could that was available in Australia and some VERY kind Playtrekker managed to get about 20 of them and mail them - at the cost of the recipient, naturally given the costs associated to the US).

I am a lurker, but it is fun to see people "in the hunt."

As for the Bud-K catalog, I have not heard anymore. My guess is that the picture on the cover is based on one of the two reasons I posted above.
