Does anyone else get the impression that when the Defiant first came out it seemed far more powerful of a warship than in later episodes. Didn't seem like anything special afterwards.

Originally, the creators stated that the Defiant was more powerful than it needed to be. It was overpowered. That power was de-emphasized later. That's sort of like the way Dax couldn't use the transporter originally, because it would hurt the symbiot. Sometime later, she beamed all over the place. Maybe the transporter was adjusted a bit...but I don't think her sudden ability to transport was ever mentioned in the show.
Yeah. I always figured that since Starfleet didn't know that the Trill were a joined species at that time, that the transporters would have figured the symbiont was a parasite, and the biofilters would have harmed it. Quick adjustment for the joined nature of the species, and all is well.
(Of course, Ben Sisko was friends with Curzon Dax, and presumably he knew about the Trill being joined, so maybe my theory falls through. Oh, well.)
A plot device to conveniently not allow this ship to totally kick ass.
Didn't seem like anything special in its first appearance if you really think about it. It was captured after all.
^ That's true. In its first episode it got easily overwhelmed by the Jem'Hadar.
Later accompicements:
*Destroyed a Jem'Hadar attack ship for the first time by Alpha Quadrant ships (at least on screen)
*While under the control of a bunch of Maquis it destroys several Cardassian ships and outposts and disables a Keldon in 5 seconds flat.
*Takes on a couple of BoPs and a Vor'cha, evacuates a Cardassian ship and gets away.
*Gives an enhanced Excelsior at least a five shot head start and reels it in.
*Engages a Borg cube from the Typhon sector all the way to Earth orbit.
*Chews through Jem'Hadar fighters for 2 years
*Destroys the Argolis Array
*Survives several hours of blockade running to get to Deep Space 9
*Fights its way through the Chin'toka OWPs to its powerplant moon
*It smashed the first two Breen ships it fought. Even when it was disabled it was just about the last ship to explode despite the fact it was the first disabled.
Its replacement in its first combat engagement survives the final battle that saw 1/3 of the Federation alliance forces lost.
Mirror universe vessel just about singlehandedly defends Terok Nor and causes major damage to the huge KCA flagship
