So I saw the ringship model thread by RichMerk, and I was inspired to design a Starfleet ringship.
I know there's a few of these out there already, but I've never really been thrilled by any of the designs (Besides the original Enterprise concepts of course). So I set out to sketch a design for something that looked more "modern", (in-universe of course) but that I thought would look more balanced. I'm going to continue to work on this, I've already got more detailed sketches made, but I thought I would get some feedback on the design before I go too far into the details.
I tried to blend the normal Starfleet Saucer-hull-nacelles arrangement with the Vulcan style ringship arrangement. The rings aren't connected to the engineering hull itself, rather, to a large nacelle like pod above it. The rings also, rather than being at the aft of the ship, are in the middle of it.
The ship has no weapons, no deflector dish, and few windows. It is also a medium sized ship in its time, being similarly sized to a constitution class ship.
In order to keep myself from forgetting, I also jotted down a quick backstory for the ship as well. Keep in mind that It was types out at around midnight a few nights ago! It also has some ideas on the warp drives in general.
The U.S.S. Bonneville was a super-high-speed warp testbed ship launched in 2344 as an experiment attempting to reach a warp-speed record. The ship was designed at Utopia Planitia, with the aide of Vulcan engineers. It was determined that the Vulcan Ringship warp setup was the most efficient and fast way to go, as the large rings produced a more even field that had a very low warp drag coefficient. It was pitted against many other designs from various complanies from all over the Federation, and it came out as the winner by a huge margin. Despite being registered under Starfleet and proving to be very much spaceworthy, the Ringship design was deemed to be too fragile to put into regular usage, and the ship was mothballed.
It was recovered during the Klingon-Federation war [Star Trek Online era] to serve as a fast courier and support ship. It was retrofitted with a small number of phaser banks, and a unique evasive technology called the "Double Team", which disguized the ship and projected numerous copies around it. The ship went into service to bring sensitive materials to engagements, to supply the front lines quickly, and as an aide to war-torn sectors, under the name the U.S.S. Wardenclyffe [In honor of Nikola Tesla's laboratory, being that the ship was experimental and revolutionary], as the name Bonneville was in use for a new battlecruiser.
