US BBC: America premiere date & party suggestion?

My daughter and I are planning a watching party for her friends (all my geek friends are back in AZ) at my ex's parents house (they're loaning us the use of their living room & big screen-tv and cable - the latter of which which I don't have)...but we need to know the day and time - especially because theses are Jr. high school students here, so if it's a school night, that could be an issue (we'd have to find someone to pre-record it for us)...

Also, since the episode would only be about an hour, I'm trying to think of ideas for something we could watch before hand...like a movie. or maybe a past Who two-parter - or a couple of our favorite episodes...

I think I'll let the kids vote on it that...but I think we'll probably settle on "The End of Time" - which makes sense, even though it's not my favorite 2-parter...I prefer the "Journey's End" 2-parter...

What would be *REALLY* great, is if I could convince them to watch a *classic* Doctor Who episode...any suggestions on a short-ish serial that some teenage nuWho fans *might* like?

I'm thinking of trying to find a place online I can order some Jelly Babies for relatively inexpensively - so if anyone knows any good sources, I'd be appreciative!

Just a suggestion and this may sound outlandish and may even come across as a radical idea, but have you thought about either looking at a diary/calender for the date it's on - 17/04/2010 and then, look through a TV listings guide, either here on the web or dare I say it, a hard copy and then, hey presto, you'll know the day it's on and the time! Hope that helps.

Right now these kids are all inconsolable over Tennant leaving, and whining that Matt Smith just "won't be as good"..."OMG, they changed the TARDIS set!!!" - I keep telling them that what people *always* say about a new Doctor...even Tennant when he first was reveled as the new Doctor...and that the TARDIS set has changed *lots* of times!!!

For most of these girls - RTD Who is the *only* Who...I showed them the TV movie a while back, but they all *hated* it... Also, they are teenagers - and mostly girls...so a bit prone to over-emotionalism - when Ianto died in Children of Earth, they all wrote fanfic about it, to deal with their grief lol...

(Of course, I cried when Donna left. We had a viewing party for that episode too - and the only other adult there - my ex-wife - said "Are you guys actually *crying*!? It's just a silly TV show!!!" So she is banned from EVER watching Doctor Who with us again - heartless *&#$@!!!)

I wouldn't worry about converting them, heck, 13-year-old girls watching any Who is impressive enough. I'd say put on "The Girl in the Fireplace", it's fun and romantic and I think may have a conceit that is used again in the series 5 premiere. "Blink" might be a good choice as well. It sounds like they're knowledgable enough anyway.

My supermarket has an ethnic section that groups by countries including England. Maybe you'd have something like that around. I imagine if you typed "Jelly Babies" into Amazon you'd likely find something as well that could be shipped before airdate.

Sadly, based on what you've told me, I don't think there's *any* classic Who story that'll appeal to them. Not enough action, sfx or romance. "Girl In The Fireplace" is probably a good suggestion, maybe "Blink" as well...if only because it's a Tennent lite ep and won't remind them that he's gone quite as much. Or Eccelston's last two eps.

Maybe find a vid that shows each doctor changing into the next so they understand that this is nothing new, that it's going to happen and they'll never go back.

My roommate recently said something like "I'm not to sure about this new guy...there's just something about him...I don't think he's going to work."

I had to remind him that he pretty much said the same thing about Tennent, and that he was wondering then, if they'd bring Eccleston back if Tennent didn't work out. To which I replied "no...they never come back..they always move forward." So I think he'll give the new guy a chance now.

I always believe that part of the reason people bemoan the loss of one doctor, is the secret fear that they'll end up liking the new guy better than the guy who might've been the favorite. I've come to appreciate them all, except McCoy.....still can't get the hang of him...but I digress.

Hmmm... They *might* like "Caves of Androzani." I got a slight feel of "Phantom of the Opera" from the Sharaz Jek/Peri scenes. That might catch the attention of teenage girls.

I thought everything was available on Netflix. (For gods sake, even a couple of the movies that I'm in are available on Netflix, and neither of those were produced by particularly reputable groups. Although, one of them did have Joe Estevez in it, but still...)

Good for them! I much prefer that complaint over that of my friend who doesn't like Tom Baker because he's not sexy enough.

Although, I heard that they once almost brought a former Doctor back for good. After Colin Baker was fired, they considered bringing back Patrick Troughton. But then he died, so that squashed that idea. But supposedly that is the reason why, for the 7th Doctor, they cast a cranky short guy.

I only have one pair of friends that get BBC America. Unfortunately, on the day of the season premiere, they're doing some sort of cancer relay. They suggested that I go to the relay with them. I suggested that, while they're at the relay, I stay behind at their house and make sure the DVR is working properly.

How about a 1920's themed party? The Unicorn and the Wasp followed by Black Orchid (if nothing else it's a classic derial that's only 2 episodes long at least.)

Actually how about TUatW, then watch Time Crash, then watch Black Orchid?
