The United States Army has more than 700,000 desktops that currently run on Windows XP operating systems and use Office 2003 software. Despite a Windows 7 release just around the corner and rumblings about Office 2010, the Army announced that it will upgrade to Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007 by the end of this year. Large corporations and government agencies are typically slow to adopt new technologies and software, mostly because of security, hardware and training issues.
The Army hopes to "bolster Internet security and begin standardization of its information systems" and officials say the initiative "will strengthen Army LandWarNet security by reducing opportunities for hackers to access and exploit government computer systems".
Like most military operations, the transition is very well-planned and strategic. "Classroom computers, dayroom and kiosk computers, new computers (such as life cycle replacement computers) and computers with minimal impact to mission readiness will be part of the initial implementation". Marcus D. Good, Chief of the Army's Information Technology Systems Support Division says, "The Army's mandate is to have 50 percent of all Windows-based systems migrated to Vista by July 31st and 100 percent by the end of the year".

And on January 2nd, 2010, America will surrender to North Korea.

Are they JOKING?! Why they're using Windows in the first place I have no clue, but they could at least wait for Windows 7. If security is their goal, they should just use something else entirely, maybe something *nix-like. Not that that's inherently more secure, but if someone experienced is really intent on hacking them, it won't matter what OS they're using, so they might as well use something that's safer from the average script kiddie.

Well, there's the right way, the wrong way, and the Army way. Windows 7 would be a far better choice than Vista.

Though, at least with them clunking along on Vista, we wouldn't have to worry about the defense network becoming self-aware. ;)

I think it's just a case of them spending the millions to study the viability of rolling out Vista across the organization... and then deciding to move forward rather than perform yet another feasibility study for when Windows 7 comes out.

Surrender to N.K.?

Won't N.Z. honor it's treaty obligations?

The U.S. Military doesn't just hop on the first train that comes along for it's "office" equipment.

Why doesn't the Army just go back to DOS operating system. I have had nothing but problems with Vista. Vista is the BIGGEST PIECE OF CRAP I have ever owned. Microsoft will be one company I wouldn't mind if they go bankrupt.

Like 50 year old nuclear bombers, 30 year old fighters. Weapons designed in the 1960s.

Vista "upgrades" aren't all that important in the over all world of reality.

Vista is not that bad. Don't over exaggerate..

It's not bad, but it's pretty stupid to be adopting old tech at this point. I know a lot of people in DoA IT (some at the top) and this is a case of the higher-ups having no idea what they are talking about. Hell, I'm surprised that Microsoft (who is a large vender for the DoD) isn't pushing Windows 7 harder because that would be a big win for them.

If the army were to adopt Windows 7 it would be another 2 or 3 years before 7 was even implemented. It takes time to both install it on all the computers as well as making sure it can be compatible with all necessary equipment (in the case of Vista, one issue was making CAC card readers compatible with Vista)

I'm not exaggerating. If anything I'm understating it.

I use Ubuntu (debian based Linux). Do you? There are choices, even paying the Apple Tax is popular

The army is going to switch to Vista?
Honestly ... they are idiots for doing this.

They would be far better off going to Windows 7 for one thing (and x64 version on top of that) and also perhaps to Linux.

They talk about security ... ok ... Windows 7 is more secure and overall better than Vista.
Implement proper anti-virus software such as NOD32 smart security alongside and you have a properly protected system on your hands (and they could use all those billions of $ into additional protection that would make their systems even more secure).

Linux on the other hand (which I used only once and not really again ... although I'm thinking on installing it alongside Win 7) would be even less vulnerable to outside attacks, as it's not as mainstream as Windows or even contains a classical file system.

Now, I've been using Vista Home Premium x64 for a while now on my laptop ... it works fine and I had no major issues with it.
It's hard drive space demands are a bit annoying indeed, but it's solid.
Having said that though, I find Windows 7 x64 better.
It's a bit more responsive and faster.
I have encountered an issue though as I'm unable to run either Nero Lite or TuneUp utilities 2009 on it.
But those are temporary issues.
The Nero thing I can probably take care of easily enough ... TuneUP on the other hand will need to wait for an update from it's makers to support Windows 7.

While it may seem a bit ludicrous for the USA (and probably DoD throughout, I'm guessing) to just NOW be shifting to Vista, it doesn't surprise me.

We're talking major acquisition project timelines... years, basically, unlike the 'normal' public home user who just walks down to BestBuy or what have you, buys the DVD or goes online and installs it.

Heck, my service is just starting to shift over to the Vista 'image' over the next year as well.

Cheers,

Well, taking into consideration that they decided to switch to Vista after so much time on one side may seem sensible.
They are operating on the premise that's allowing enough time for the OS to 'mature'.

But ... Windows 7 (at least if the Ultimate x64 RC I'm running is any indication) is already mature on it's own and is essentially an upgraded/optimized/securer/cleaned up version of Vista.
Windows 7 is built upon Vista indeed, but is still better in comparison and a far better option to install if you are switch from XP.
