Urusei Yatsuri (Lum) Beautiful Dreamer

Mr. Sin

Commander
Anybody remember this kind of trippy anime movie? It was one of the films sci-fi used to play as part of their anime block, way back in the mid-90s. It was directed by Mamori Oshii, who would later go on to do the acclaimed Ghost In The Shell, among other projects.

For those not familiar with Uresei Yatsura, it was basically a sci-fi comedy about an alien girl who falls in love with a hapless Japanese teen. It was by Rumiko Takahashi, who would later work on the popular Ranma 1/2. It definetly inspired later anime; most notably the Tenchi Muyo! franchise.

Yeah, I own the movie on LD and even have the original soundtrack. It was my first introduction to the Urusei Yatsura series and it took me awhile to understand all of the characters and the storyline in the movie but I found it quite enjoyable. I have to say that I don't find newer anime quite as interesting and compelling as some of the older series like Urusei Yatsura, Bubblegum Crisis, Project A-Ko, etc.

I haven't seen it. I usually try not to watch franchise films based on series I haven't seen. I have seen other works by Rumiko Takahashi however, such as Maison Ikkoku and InuYasha. I haven't gotten around to Urusei Yatsura mainly because it's so darn long, at 196 episodes and I don't have space for it....or $450 lying around somewhere either.

In my anime viewing I do make time for the classics every once in a while though, and it's on my list. For instance right now I'm watching Fist of the North Star and You're Under Arrest!
