Upcoming SFF novel/novella/short story movie and TV Adaptations

Eh, it was a bombardment ship early in life, so saying you sent Terror to your enemies isn't the worst thing.

Yeah, from what I understand it was chosen because of its strength and was heavily modified to be even stronger. The fact that it was named Terror was inconsequential, though according to the story, many felt the expedition was cursed.

Yes. It was beefy to survive launching the bombs, so made for a good choice for expeditions in heavy ice. Not so heavy ice that you can't sail a boat through though, apparently...

Out of that list I think the only one I've read is The Dark Tower. The problem I have is that it often seems that reading the source material sours me on the adaptation because it's hard to get around that "But in the book...!" reaction when stuff is changed. In case of The Dark Tower, I have trouble with casting Roland as a black man because in the book without giving too much away but it's very central to his relationship with one of the other main characters. It'd be easier if I didn't know anything about the books. Similarly, that aside, Idris Elba doesn't seem as gaunt and weathered as I imagined Roland to be. I probably should evaluate it on its own merits but it's difficult not to constantly compare to the source material being familiar with it.

Even though I don't read books nearly as much as I should in the first place, I sometimes go out of my way to avoid reading ones that I know are being made into TV or movies or at least until I've seen them as I know it will taint my viewing experience.

As an aside about the HMS Terror, say what you want I'm still not booking a cruise on the Horror of the Seas.

Not exactly genre, but The Alienist by Caleb Carr is finally becoming a mini-series on TNT, after twenty years of failed attempts to make it into a movie.

It's funny how it works. Sometimes bestselling books go from page to screen in record time (see GONE GIRL or GIRL ON A TRAIN or even FIFTY SHADES OF GREY) and sometime they're in development for decades before they finally make it to the screen (see ENDER'S GAME or INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE.)

At this point, I'm very jaded and cynical when Hollywood comes calling. I won't slap "Soon to be a major motion picture!" on a book cover until the movie actually starts filming!

^Which is probably smart. I'm amazed at times how many movies and TV shows are announced but then never end up happening. I would think it'd be better to wait until the project is definitely happening than to make a big announcement and never actually make the movie or TV show.

It can be a temptation to want to hype your big movie deal right away, in hopes of selling more copies of the book ("Soon to be a major motion picture!") but, yeah, I'm inclined to err toward caution, if only to maintain credibility. You don't want consumers to start thinking that such blurbs are nothing but hype.

I still have a copy of THE DEMOLISHED MAN by Alfred Bester that has a "Soon to be" starburst on the cover--and that edition came out in the seventies.

I'm still waiting . . .. .

I have to admit, when I started this thread, I didn't realize just how much stuff was in the works, so I don't think I'm going to be keeping up with this list, there's just to much stuff.
