Unsung Extras of Trek

Neopeius

Admiral
Admiral
In my truly down time, I've taken to watching TOS eps and capping all those uncredited extras hovering in the background. I thought I'd make a website devoted to all the little known people who populated the bridge and corridors and rec room scenes. I don't know what use it would be, but it's fun to see unfamiliar faces in uniform and make up stories about them. Perhaps someone will make the uber master list of the Crew of the Enterprise.

Anyway, here's the first page I finished. If you like it, I'll do more. ^_^

The Corbomite Maneuver

Speaking of an "uber list," I hate to say it after all your obvious hard work, but I recall a site on the net that goes into excruciating detail on just about every extra who ever set foot on the set. I recall some of the odd names, something like "Lewis Lite," "Dark Jones," etc.

Sorry, no link. But I do like your layout better and hope you keep it up. Looks great.

Thanks. You're right, of course. Lots of different places have done something like this, but not to this degree, I don't think. I definitely draw on their expertise to help me figure stuff out.

I like the way you've done it as well Neopeius. If you carry this all the way to the end it will be interesting to see what the final "known" crew roster is. Of course, the farther along you get the easier it's going to become since they started cutting back on the extras at some point.

Lt Brent, the dark haired crewman... I swear there was one episode where he wore all three uniform colours.

An ex once asked me who he was since he was in the background in so many episodes. I said he was just an extra they used a lot so she named him herself. She called him Fritz.

Brent has definitely been in a lot of colors, though when in red, he's "DaVinci". I'll document him in every episode he appears. ^_^ I've got caps for the first seven episodes so I'll turn them into webpages as time permits.

Very helpful, thank you! I like using everyone else's material to refine mine. The one thing I've got on the rest is the biggest caps. ^_^

I just put up Man Trap with lots of good extras.

Edit: Note, there are plenty of people not on these pages. My philosophy is that if you can't make out a face, there's really no point. I want caps which let you figure out who was in which episodes.

Because he was in so many episodes, and actually had a name, you may not consider him one of your extras, but my favorite background character was always Lt. Leslie.

I know I'm not alone, because I've seen entire websites devoted to his appearances. He changes uniforms in mid-episode, shows up in more than one place at a time, came back from the dead once.

Plus he even had the conn once, for about 2 seconds, though I can't remember off-hand which ep it was without looking it up.

Also, the actor, Eddie Paskey, is pretty cool. He has his own website, and you can get autographed pics of "Leslie in Action".

I exchanged a few emails with Eddie a couple of years ago when I bought some of his pics, and he has a really cool attitude about the whole thing.

He autographed his pic "Red Shirts Rule!".

Anyway, I know it's partially off-topic, but I had to chime in with chops for my favorite red shirt.

Oh, Mr. Leslie/Rand/Connors/Rand will definitely be on my site. Also Lieutenant Hadley and Lieutenant Brent/Vinci.

^_^

Ah yes, Mr Leslie - aka the 'King of the Redshirts' :D Something of an unsung hero - I did a piece on him and some of the other background extras (such as the aforementioned Frank Da Vinci, Roger Holloway and Bill Blackburn, who holds the unofficial record for uncredited appearances on the show with 59) for another board I used to mod at a few years ago (sadly defunct now). I've got something of a soft spot for Eddie though thanks to his sheer versatility (he wore all 3 shirt colours and played no less than 4 different characters as well as doubling for Bill Shatner on occasions) and the fact he was killed in one episode ('Obsession') only to be resurrected the very next week and reinstalled in his usual bridge position as if nothing had happened!

My uncle, Jim Drake, was an extra on two third season episodes: The Way to Eden (as an intern in Sickbay), and Turnabout Intruder (one of the Red Shirts who arrests Spock).

Good to know! When I get there.. some day.. I'll be sure to note that.

Very cool

Sorry to take so long between updates. Between writing articles and a book on Afghanistan, I've been busy. But not too busy to completely neglect my pet project.

Charlie X has been added.

(And remember--if you see familiar faces between shows whom I haven't identified, please speak up)
