What?! I've seen this before it was an NBC television movie with Rob Lowe called
Atomic Train (TV 1999)

A waste disposal company has a Russian nuclear bomb to transport, and an employee decides to save money by concealing it on a freight train. The train, also loaded with hazardous and flammable chemicals, suffers a brake failure and becomes a runaway heading for Denver. A wreck would be bad enough, but much, much worse if the bomb goes off. A heroic NTSB investigator boards the train; he and the railwaymen try various ways to stop the train, but nothing works. Meanwhile Denver residents are struggling to collect their families and then leave town, despite rioters and gridlock. Will the train have to be derailed to stop it? If it does derail, will the bomb explode, and if it does, what then?

Two escaped convicts and a female railway worker find themselves trapped on a train with no brakes and nobody driving.

but that didn't have the disaster toxic waste/nuclear element to it.

I saw this movie yesterday, and enjoyed it thoroughly: a nice, solid bit of action-fluff. The performances from Washington, Pine, and Dawson were all quite good. Tony Scott's direction was unusually restrained. And it was an interesting change of pace to see an exciting and suspenseful movie without any violence.

I thought from the commercials that it looked similar to his last movie, The Taking of Pelham 123, though the concept is different here. Still, 2 train movies in a row? Does the guy have a fetish?

Washington must have a great working relationship with Tony Scott since this is their fifth movie now. Depp has Tim Burton, DiCaprio has Martin Scorsese, Crowe has Ridley Scott, seems like Washington could do a little better, and I say this as someone who likes Tony Scott.

It was better than the remake. No train movie I've seen beats the original.

Still, Unstoppable was great. It was a little slow getting moving, but once it ramped up it was fantastic. A true Tony Scott thrill ride.

Meh. Put me in the category of people who think Denzel is highly overrated as an actor. I'll admit that what he does he does well, but he plays like, maybe three different people in his movies.

Well, I'm sure even great actors enjoy the chance to just cash a paycheque now and then.

Denzel Washington never gives anything less than a good performance, but he wasn't exactly stretching himself in Unstoppable.

I meant in terms of Tony Scott movies, not Denzel Washington. As far as I know, he didn't direct The Book of Eli. Though the case of Denzel Washington being in both of them is interesting. I agree though that the original Pelham was the best. The remake removed any tension that it should have had. But I did like what it did with the ending. As for Tony Scott's movie though, to be honest, they feel rather generic.

It's just like the runaway train, it takes a while to get up to speed, but when it does it's moving!

No need to make another train movie because Unstoppable is it. The heroism of all invovled even the Marine vet in his failed attempt was much more moving then facing the armed robbers with their uberplots. Even the Fed was a good guy!

As a locomotive engineer, I look forward to seeing this movie. However, I'm on-call 24/7 and they've been working us a lot lately, and it never seems to be showing when I'm awake and not subject to call. I will probably go with two other rails and watch it, riffing alound MST3K-style...
