Uniform Question

Purdy Bear

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I had a dream last night were I was wearing a Star Trek uniform, but it had orange as a ID of the area I worked in. Has there ever been an orange and what work was it?

Iv seen red, blue, yellow, even white.

Thanks
Purdy

Mabye Starfleet has a community service program picking up trash on the side of the road that you were a part of... did you get a DUI conviction in your dream? :)

In the TOS movies, yellow ochre, which looks much like orange, was used by engineering, weapons, and flight control personnel. Most notably, it was worn by Scotty, Hikaru Sulu, and Demora Sulu.

ST:TMP had orange - for Science. ie. Spock wore orange. His colour patch behind the insignia badge, his epaulets, even his spacesuit.

TMP had: white (command), science (orange), medical (green), engineering (red), helm/ship's services (yellow), security (grey).

The latter movies had: white (command), science/ship's services (blue/grey), medical (green), helm/engineering (yellow), security (black, purple), cadet/trainee (red).

The yellow ochre color used for the engineering division is much closer to orange than to yellow. It should probably be termed "yellowish ochre", ochre being family of colors based on a reddish-brown pigment.

The complete roster of divisions during this period entailed:

White - Command (admin, command, diplomacy, intel, legal)
Yellow Ochre (Orange) - Engineering (engineering, helm, weapons)
Grey - Science (communications, navigation, science)
Light Green - Medical
Windsor Green - Security
Sky Blue - Special Services (cooks, musicians, etc.)
Royal Blue - Ground forces? Commandos? (seen on assault party members in TFF)
Flame Red - Cadets and Trainees

To your eyes, perhaps, but Scotty's Engineering outfit features the red circular patch in TMP and the yellow patch (not orange) in the latter films.

The collars. shoulder straps and sleeve stripes are more yellow than orange. We have plenty of natural ochre here in Australia. It's more of a burnt yellow than orange - and nothing like Science orange in TMP.

(I'd actually forgotten TMP when I mentioned the TOS movies earlier.)

You are pointing out the division colors of the TWOK and later movie uniforms. TMP was slightly different in that it was white for command, yellow for operations, gray for weapons and security, orange for science, red for engineering. and olive green for medical. Spike's site is great reference for such things:

I was watching "Generations" last night. The trim on the uniforms worn by Scotty and Demora Sulu was a vibrant, golden yellow, yellow, yellow. (Under some lighting conditions in some of the movies, you can see it is actually a burnt yellow, but never orange.)

As I said in an earlier post, TMP had colour patches behind the insignias in both golden yellow and orange (and four other division colours). It was the orange division colour that fell into disuse after TMP, while the golden yellow TMP patches were sewn onto the ST II-VI engineering suits.

Hi to all,
Nice idea to this colour pattern
Thank's

We might perhaps argue that orange never was a common color even in TMP - that it didn't denote something as mundane as Science. Instead, it might be the "leftover" color, to be assigned to occasional visitors who have no natural position and don't carry their own wardrobe. Thus, there'd be spare orange epaulets for visiting Vulcan weirdos and prying press representatives, Galactic Commissioners and whatnot.

(The spacesuits never appeared particularly color-coded, and indeed their one-size-fits-all construction probably means that the people aboard don't have their own dedicated spacesuits.)

Note that Commander Sonak appears to be wearing a bright red badge, vs. the clearly orange one of Commander Spock...
