Uniform over jacket ???

I've been looking at the stills from both trailers and I've seen we have many different type of uniforms in this new movie but I've seen this picture and I've noticed that the grey uniform seems to be over there uniform shirts look at the see thru triangle patch you can see the gold shirt of kirks uniform underneath ?? What is this jacket for some sort of protection or a uniform variant ??

^ Perhaps that is only a small patch of color to denote the wearer's division. It doesn't necessarily mean the whole shirt is under there.

In reality the jacket (referred to as a "flight suit" on Trekmovie.com) isn't worn over a uniform shirt. There's a photo of Zachary Quinto and Alice Eve with their jackets undone and off and they had a black tee and a black tank top underneath. But that doesn't mean that it isn't *meant* to be worn over it in-universe. If that makes sense. Why dress your actors up in all the layers when only the top one's gonna show?

Also, were Sulu's shoulder stripes blue in the 9-minute preview when he's on the shuttle? Or is it the lighting?

Honestly, it seems to me that that's a coloured patch that runs down the ribs of the jacket, like the Stargate Atlantis uniforms.

Also, you'll notice that there are those three stripes that run down the length of that colored patch, and those stripes don't appear to be on the normal duty uniforms.

Those three stripes are the seams of the regular gold uniform underneath. Also the delta pattern can be seen on either side of the seam. This seam does correspond with the front shoulder seam on the regular gold uniform.

I take the outer suit to be a type of environmental suit, IMHO.

Reminds me if the over jacket they had in the pilot episode the cage !!! But it looks like a new over jacket for the new film hopefully it won't cause much distraction in the new film hopefully there keep the iconic gold red blue uniform tops !!!

They're clearly meant to be wearing the Enterprise duty uniform under the jacket - there's a transparent plastic window built into the jacket to reveal what's underneath.

No idea. They're clearly meant to be wearing the red/yellow/blue duty uniform under it; there's no other reason for the specifics of the design.
