Ubisoft borrows no-CD crack to resolve issues with Rainbow Six Vegas 2

rType

Commander
If D2D users patched to 1.02, then replaced the EXE with this one, they could then update to the new patch. However, someone ran a hex edit and it appears the fix was not Ubisoft code but actually a ‘no-cd’ crack released by the Scene group RELOADED.

yes, but if you pass that in the Latin declension, my point is still moot.

Perhaps that particular paragraph wasn't the best to excerpt. :o

Re: Ubisoft borrows no-CD crack to resolve issues with Rainbow Six Veg

Draconian DRM for pc games at present is pointless almost all of the current techniques have been have been cracked. Also some copy protection methods such as star force have been linked to creating security vulnerabilities in windows and degrading system performance. Also star force does not come with an uninstaller therefore it will remain on your system even after you remove the game it shipped with. These techniques often alienate potential customers. I wish that companies would follow the example of star dock games which created galactic civ2 and decided to remove copy protection from their games. Most games developers thought that this was a suicidal move however galactic civ 2 became one of the top selling PC strategy games selling 300,000 copies. Also Sins of a Solar Empire which is made by the same company has already sold about 200,000 copies in the first month of release. Neither of these titles have CD copy protection. Game companies should follow star docks example and not treat their customers as thieves. If they produce a high quality game and provide reasonable after-release support in the form of free updates that add new content and features that are painless for customers to get, you create a real incentive to be a customer.

^ I'm playing through Mass Effect at the moment and being required to have the game disc in the drive to play the game is rather annoying as I often like to watch DVDs whilst gaming. After using Steam for most of my PC gaming needs for so long now, "please insert disc" seems like an anachronism. I don't have to insert a disc to run Microsoft Word, why for games? Ditch this bullshit.

ME PC actually doesn't require you to have the disc in the drive

Minor technicality, you're missing the forest for the trees!

I just checked, you're right. I'm not sure where I got the idea that I needed it, actually. :o

Well considering so many other games do, it's an understandable assumption!

I totally agree in general though about needed the discs in the drive. I don't object to DRM that requires authorization either as long as it's unobtrusive... though I don't see the purpose that putting limits on the number of installs has. I've never run into said limits, but I know other people that have simply by having to reinstall a game and it just doesn't make sense.

Originally ME was going to have to reauth every 10 days and that made just as little sense. Then again, Steam reauths every time you launch a game if you don't put it into offline mode (which is apparently unreliable?). But it's a lot easier to put up with Steam since it does so many other nice things (like automatic patching).

Re: Ubisoft borrows no-CD crack to resolve issues with Rainbow Six Veg

^ Right, Steam's DRM is transparent to the user and part of a service that provides tangible benefits to the user experience. I recall thoroughly disliking Steam when Valve forced an initial migration to the platform by shutting down the WON authentication servers for Counter-Strike, but it's evolved into an impressive platform.

I also like the MMO system where the DRM, such as it is, exists as a function of the game structure itself. One can copy World of Warcraft using the esoteric Copy and Paste commands, or download the client directly from Blizzard's FTP server, it's not going to do you any good without an account.

I love that they used a no-CD crack to fix their direct download version... that's awesome.

WTF? How the hell can you play a game and watch a DVD at the same time? i'd go mental trying to do that...

Re: Ubisoft borrows no-CD crack to resolve issues with Rainbow Six Veg

^ I run two displays on this PC, so the game goes on one and the DVD on the other. Of course in practice it works better for certain types of games than others. Apocalypse Now whilst playing Bioshock? No. Firefly episodes whilst playing Team Fortress 2? Sure. :)
