Has anyone ever read an early script of "A Piece of the Action" (or some other source) that refers to the Magellan instead of the Horizon?

Actually, I think this is germane to your purposes here. If your goal is collecting information about the ship that left Chicago Mobs of the Twenties on Sigma Iotia II, then it helps you to have information and hear hypotheses to determine whether you think it was likely the U.S.S. or E.C.S. Horizon.
