Greetings all,
One of the things I enjoy about these boards are some outstanding works of "Starship Art" done by many several artists who populate this reality... Starship designs, concepts, and even a couple of fully 3D interiors. All of which leave me in awe! These individuals and their works are to say the least, my inspiration...THANK YOU ALL!
Project Background
Some time back I started work on an update of the Franz Joseph destroyer class vessels.
Well, what with one thing and another managing two careers and something called life, the destroyer project got shelved.
Not long ago, (actually a couple of years), started playing Star Trek Online. The representation of the ships and especially the interiors were awful. I was bemoaning the fact to my son (35) also a draftsman and carpenter etc. Where upon he climbed in my case about the affore mentioned destroyer project which had gotten so far as to name the ship the Langley.
Initial Design Review
Ok, says I, (thus beginning the journey into madness), I can do this, aerospace firms, NASA, 20+ years drafting, yada-yada... Lets see, 5 view drawing, top, front, back, bottom and side views and then the inboard profile! How hard can that be? (foolish mortal...) Plus, (Are you ready for the lie?) I've already got a bunch of blocks and details from the old Langley that I can import, no sweat...
Not all that pleased with the Langley, drawings our hero decides to do his second favoritest starship of all time the Bozeman-esque, Maranda. Only a few changes, says I, an we're down the road! (Ha!)
Feeling squirrely, our hero decides to jump out there and name the ship after the place I was born... Cleveland. A little digging on the internet and low and behold, the USS Cleveland (CL 55) was a light cruiser during WWII. (Perfect!) So I took the name USS Cleveland for my starship and added the NCC 1955 as the ship number. I used the NCC 19- prefix to keep close to established numbers for Bozman's 1941, Reliant's 1984, and to set the ship time line as prior to Excelsior (NX/NCC 2000).
Canon Vs Howitzer
The Cleveland Light Cruiser(CL55) class of ships can trace its lineage back to the Treaty of Versailles at the close of WWI (Old Earth Date:1919), which laid out very specific details of what kind/size/type of armament of war ships which could be built in the future by all parties. This included the Allied Powers as well as the Central Powers and their allied nations respectively.
Ah ha! says I (rolling out the Star Trek howitzer...can't afford a canon). In days of TOS there was the Treaty Of Organia (2267) Ref: "Errand of Mercy" episode. If I stretch the the Organian Treaty a bit here and there, I could squeeze in some Treaty of Versailles like stuff to explain the existance of the Lt. Cruiser Class Star Ships verses the big guys like Enterprise (1701). Of which there are very limited numbers. It would also serve to explain the proliferation of B'rel/K'vort, Birds of Prey over the K't'inga (D7).
Project Definition
So other than the afore mentioned five views and cut-a-way what do I want to achieve with this drawing?
1. A little more of ships systems.
2. A little more of ships structure.
3. Engines to be reworked to look a bit more "aircraft engine-ish".(A more drive and propulsion look ILO pinched nacelle and fins.)
4. Reactors to be in nacelles, no warp core domes/chrystals on exterior.
5. Update/enhancement of engine to follow the look of TOS/TMP time frame.
6. Crew representation for size reference purposes.
7. Up date exterior markings.
8. Up date console stiles a/r.
9. All ST design elements are on the table for possible use.
WIP
So with that said here is what I came up with, a work in progress as it were. Still to go are the landing bays, the bridge, and the more mundane stuff like the drawing keys/find numbers, line weights that sort of thing...
