Two great deals!

[Trek Survivor]

At a car boot last week, I picked up a huge box of 40+ Trek novels (mostly TNG and DS9) from the mid-to-late 1990s for a little under £4. At the bottom were several sets of the CCG from the same time period, which I then sold (starting bid less than 99p) on ebay for around £7. Woo-hoo, I thought, I ended up getting all these great books for basically free. I didn't think anything could beat that.

Then, I was in the hospital waiting room and there's a shelf of 2nd hand books there for 50p each. I saw some SCE books, which I'm not into so left...and then found three "Titan" books, Resistance and Books 1 and 2 of the "Destiny" trilogy. £3 well spent! They all look unread!

Talk about a great way to get back into the novels! (the only post-Nem book I've read is Death In Winter, so I'm really looking forward to reading these - are there any I should read before "Destiny" to know what's going on?)

I had a similar experience a few months ago with TOS novels. I stumbled upon a used book store where I found most for the first 60 novels that I didn't have, as well as several hardcovers. The guy was so happy to free up space in his store, that he gave me a huge discount on the paperbacks, and threw in the hardcovers for free!

I've managed to get "Vulcan's Heart", "Millennium", "The 34th Rule", "The Lives of Dax", several early "New Frontier" books, "The Captain's Daughter", "Where Sea meets Sky" and the incomparable "A Stitch in Time"- all at second hand bookshops, all cheap. Still haven't found "Diplomatic Implausibility" sadly, which much continuity depends upon (plus I've heard it's very good).

I've ordered from their used stores at least a couple dozen times, and the worst thing that ever happened to me was that it came a couple weeks late, and that only happened once. The condition was always exactly as advertised, and the transaction was totally painless.

^I've used Amazon and ebay for tons of trek-lit purposes, and i've never had a problem. I used to be very cautious as well when it came to online purchasing, but after using both sites, I have since mellowed on the subject. Ebay is little bit of a bigger gamble than Amazon, but it's still the best way to complete your collection, in my opinion.

I have to but in here and one-up the lot of you: A few years ago at a (now sadly gone) RNIB charity shop I picked up around 300 Trek novels for the grand total of £20.

It was one of those weird moments: They had a few books on display which I picked up and bought. Being a charity shop and all I asked if they had any more backstage. The guy behind the till burst out laughing and led me backstage. They had several crates worth that they wanted rid of ASAP. I said “£20 for the lot?” not realizing that there were six other crates full too. It took me and my sister several trips to get the lot home.

Loads were repeats, but when it was all sorted out I spent something like 20-25p per book (not counting repeats). There was virtually everything up until the mid 90’s, expect the James Blish/Alan Dean Foster adaptations.

A few were very mildly water damaged, and most were a little tattered (mint condition? I’ll pick a well-loved book any day)

I was in awe for weeks. I remember sitting on the floor surrounded by 3ft stacks of Trek books with my family sorting them all out with the biggest grin on my face.

And that’s how I got serious about my TrekLit :-)

I’m sure everyone who spent a fortune on their book collection now hates me very much :-P

I'll add that I recently ordered a Trek book, and it was not in as good shape as advertised, but still fine with me. The guy had said "like new" for a book published in '96, and it was yellowed and wrinkled about the spine, though still "tight."

I made a comment about it in the "feedback" section, not really griping, just being honest. The seller immediately offered me a complete refund, and I could keep the book. I guess they live or die by those reviews.
