Once Upon a Time had the best 18-49 rating for a drama series premiere in the last two years.

The feedback has been pretty good by all account and its timeslot keeps it away from the heavy cable hitters so theres a chance for it no doubt after that start. However the whole concept seems like it would burn out rather quick.

Looks like ABC might try to ride the coattails and use it to salvage Pan Am. They should run heavy ads for Pan Am during OUAT, emphasizing the fairy tale style of Pan Am. It's not really so hugely different in style from OUAT and I think there could be more audience overlap. Too bad the shows aren't back to back.

However the whole concept seems like it would burn out rather quick.
As long as they take an imaginative approach to interpreting fairy tale characters (and that does seem to be what they'll be doing), I think they have plenty of material that they could use for years.

But all this is premature. The acid test of any show, particularly a genre show, is episode #2.

AMC has renewed The Walking Dead for a third season and CBS has given Person of Interest and Unforgettable full season orders.

Edit to add: one of the key indicators for premiere shows is whether the ratings go up or down in the quarter-hour breakdowns - in other words did people tune in out of curiousity and change the channel as the premiere episode progressed, indicating ratings are likely to go down sharply with subsequent episodes, or did viewers stick with the show, or did even more and more people tune in as the premiere progressed, indicating the show may have ratings strength going forward. Once Upon a Time did very well in that regard since its ratings went up each quarter hour:

8:00-8:15
- 12.575 million viewers
- 7.3/11 HH
- 3.9/10 A18-49

8:15-8:30
- 12.849 million viewers
- 7.5/11 HH
- 4.0/10 A18-49

8:30-8:45
- 12.962 million viewers
- 7.5/11 HH
- 4.1/10 A18-49

8:45-9:00
- 13.352 million viewers
- 7.7/11 HH
- 4.1/10 A18-49

Holy crap. I expected Once Upon a Time to bomb hard since it was outright fantasy! That's good to see.

Once upon a time was awesome I am so looking forward to how this play's out. even though it has the writers from lost.

That's impressive numbers for the Walking Dead, beating most NBC shows. I'm not surprised they already renewed it.
