There's so much to watch on Monday night! I confess...I watch TV for three hours on this night.... First Gossip Girl, then Heroes, then CSI: Miami. GG is the only one that's up from last year...and honestly, my favorite out of the three. :o :D

Yay for Heroes remaining nice & stable.

And with the renewals for Knight Rider and Sarah Connor, it's official. Neilsens don't count for spit! :p

Or to be more specific, they don't count on NBC and Fox, where you can pay the bills by having the hero complain bitterly that the villain just stole his precious Toyota Corolla to make a getaway. A Corolla?!? So lame, Prison Break. At least on My Own Worst Enemy, Christian Slater is fighting with himself over a Camaro.

On ABC and CBS, I'm not so sure. Poor Pushing Daisies, can't do product placements. :( That bee episode should have been sponsored by Burt's Bees. Why can't Ned start using Cool Whip on all his pies?

Winners...
DWTS, Samantha Who?, CSI Miami and Two and a Half Men

Honorable Mention...
Heroes, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother and Worst Week

Decent...
Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill

Fighting Back...

Losers...
My Own Worst Enemy, Prison Break and Sarah Connor Chronicles

Round-up...

Lets start with Chuck, which fought back this week by gaining 700,000 viewers and 0.2 in the demo, which is a level that should be enough to get a full 2nd season but the jury is still out on anything pass that. Heroes was down by 200,000 viewers and 0.3 in the demo which is not good since the demo has dropped below 4.0 for the first time in its history, Tim Kring get writing up a possible ending for season 4 at this rate if the erosion contines (pity because season 3 has been good). As for My Own Worst Enemy, expect it to not live past the first 9 episodes and I bet Journeyman is looking good now ey NBC.

FOX may of given SCC a full season but there is no way the show will get a 3rd season unless it cracks back in the 7 million range minimum and it may depend on how clever FOX can be come midseason. Prison Break will most likely end after 13 since there is no room for it come midseason with the SCC pick up.

ABC had a great night thanks top DWTS and Samantha Who? though the comedy should be pulling in a better demo. Boston Legal, which is going out with a bang in terms of the writing is holding its own and ABC you will MISS IT when its gone.

CBS had a typical strong night and I think full season orders are going to be given all round however Worst Week may still be in trouble since CBS are greedy when it comes to audience retention. CW had another solid Monday night, pity it can't say the same about many other nights.

I'm not sure about that - last I heard Fox wanted to reduce the Prison Break count only to be told by the production team (or someone like that) 'sorry, you contracted us for 22 episodes, that's what you're getting'.

Now whether that means those final 9 episodes get delayed to the summer to make way for SCC and 24, or whether they move it to another night is another question...

Amusing as it is to play the game, the "demo" is not just the 18-49. The real Nielsen data is sliced in other ways, notably income demographics. But, just to keep it complicated, the total number of viewers, not just for all shows but for the networks as a whole, still plays a role in determining ad rates.

Despite bbs grousing, the networks are industriously trying to sell Tivo and other delayed/alternate viewing as legitimate factors in determining rates. It is after all in their interests. Their problem is that it is genuinely hard to assess the advertising value of commercials in the other viewing venues.

It is nearly as certain that any income from iTunes, sales of DVD sets and such are also counted. But they too are hard to value, being either rather small as yet or going to different pockets. But then, if the different pockets ultimately belong to the same entity, there can be more flexibility.

The effectiveness of product placement is yet to be determined. If advertisers come to think it ineffective, it will not substitute for ratings. At this time, it seems to be a ploy used mainly by the production companies, which are not the same thing as the networks.

Plus, the revenue stream from the "news" (which I gather includes the morning shows,) is very significant for the networks, as well as the late night talk shows. (Both will keep NBC afloat even as its primetime programming sinks.) And there are the soaps too.

In other words, for networks the bottom line is determined by too many things we don't know---income demographics and actual production costs being two of the most significant. One swallow does not make a summer.
Two renewals that look dubious from the outside don't mean the ratings are now irrelevant. Renewals of orderline shows like Scrubs or Friday Night Lights have happened for years.

Fox's renewal of Terminator may well be repaid in their eyes by PR for the new movie---or is it, PR by the new movie? And NBC's renewal of Knight Rider may reflect the simple determination that, since scripted prime time programming is now a lesser part of the company's revenue stream, limited funds and time for new development should be targeted at weaker part of the schedule---which is not Knight Rider, since NBC is doing so badly right now.

I heard that too. I think the number became 16 or some random number and the PB team went "Sorry, you will get what you get", I think other shows need to do that too.

But yeah Fox has too many 2009 shows....

Amusing as it is to play the game, the "demo" is not just the 18-49.
It is to the advertisers and they gots the money.
Despite bbs grousing, the networks are industriously trying to sell Tivo and other delayed/alternate viewing as legitimate factors in determining rates. It is after all in their interests.
And it's in the advertisers interests to refuse to pay higher ad rates based on TiVO. They gots the money, they win the argument. (But they might use TiVO figures to get more product placements, which is what they really like cuz nobody can zap those.)

The effectiveness of product placement is yet to be determined.

The effectiveness of regular ads haven't been "determined" either. It's all based on indirect evidence, you do an ad campaign and see what the sales figures do. How can you tell if the ads are causing the sales figures to go up or down? You can't because there are other factors in the mix, from store placement to the economy. If not really knowing how ads impact anything, or if they impact anything at all, were a barrier, TV wouldn't even exist because nobody would run ads, period.

Take a look at NBC overall. They can't cancel their entire lineup. They'll just give Sylar a Nissan Versa so he can haul the braaaains around in the trunk.

As for My Own Worst Enemy, expect it to not live past the first 9 episodes and I bet Journeyman is looking good now ey NBC.
Given how sophomore shows are struggling, there's no reason to believe Journeyman would have done any better.

Heroes is probably not cheap to make and longer a show goes on the more expensive it gets mainly due to cast wages and Heroes has a big cast. However Universal are directly behind Heroes and they are NBC so the worldwide fanbase actually means something to them, similar to why ABC kept Scrubs on (DVD sales and Worldwide sydnication plus the demo of course in got in LIVE and DVR viewings).

I am not saying for one minute that Heroes will get cancelled, I think it will make the 5 or maybe due to the strike 5 and half season plan that Kring had but the Erosion must stop because eventually it can dip only so far but lucky for it NBC other shows are dipping qucker.

Several times I've spotted the claim that the income bracket of the Scrubs audience was what saved it. The 18-49 rating for Scrubs was better than its overall rating but as I recall (incorrectly?) years ago it dropped to the levels typical now.

Thats interesting, ABC did the same with Boston Legal with $100k for its audience so thats a factor the that network at least.

Good to see HIMYM performing well.

Yeah great news!!!

And Monday was such a good episode. didn't see that coming because I was laughing so hard.
IMO it was one of the best episodes on this show's entire run. It just gets better and better.

Agreed. My most favourite thing about this show is that it tries it best to show the "last" stage of growing up. You are out of college and trying to strike it on your own. And Sarah Chalke was smoking in that episode.
