TV Ratings - 5x08 (The Hungary Earth)

Considering the weather country wide last Friday Saturday its no surprise TV rating are down, but still when the actual figures come out i have no doubt they will be will into the 5mil plus....which is still good stuff all round.

But in the past when the weather was just as hot and sunny, the ratings never got that bad! It should be based on the population that bothered to tune in, and not so much emphasis put on 'shares'. Where's the 1-2 million viewers gone who tuned in to episode 8 of seasons 1-4 on comparably sunny days?

Well those are only the unofficial over night figures, and as we have seen from previous over night figures the official figures are always higher, so i would not be surprised if we see well into the 6 mill plus.

As for viewing figures if i remember correctly episodes from previous series since the relaunch in 2005 have been roundabout 6 million in the summer months, I'm sure in Tennants first year his summer episodes with in the 6 mill figure.

Series 1 had no compariable sunny days, nor did series three and four. Series two was the only one that had anything comparable, even then it wasn't as hot for as long.

I for one have stopped watching Doctor Who on TV, moving over to watching it purely on iPlayer (because the digital signal is crap).

The evening when parting of the ways was on was pretty warm as I remember, but the last time we've had these temperatures this early in the year was before my time I suspect.

Timofnine I'd say what's happened with your nephew is what's happened with my nieces, they are 5 years older than they were when it started and now prefer to be outside with their mates rather than sat inside with their parents/uncles/whoever watching telly.

Final numbers for last week are in...

^ Although I'm sure a basher will accuse me of "just making excuses" it's also worth pointing out with these numbers that we're also mid-season, with no "event" episodes happening (really, the Silurians aren't an event) and novelty of a new Doctor has worn off a bit. I don't have numbers in front of me, but I bet you see similar slumps in other regular seasons with things picking up as the finale, usually considered an event, approaches.

I also went on Google to check something. The percentage numbers as I understand it are comparable to the "share" numbers used in American ratings. According to Nielsen's ratings for April 27, the #1 show of that night, American Idol, scored a household share of 17, with the key 18-49 demographic reaching 20. Compare to the lowest share listed above, the Vampires episode, which hit over 30. And even the "low-rated" Hungry Earth got a higher share than Vampires.

So proportionately speaking, Doctor Who is still scoring impressive numbers if it's attracting a third of UK viewers. American Idol in its heydey was rarely able to do that with US viewers.

So Audience Share is the most important number here.

Potentially yes because you can only get the people watching TV at that moment. BBC mandate is to provide a service and not to directly compete against other networks for the sole purpose of ratings --- to an extent of course.

Doctor Who gets between 30-40% of the switched on TV audience generally throughout its 13 episode run every season normally translating between 7-9 million.

Its all good in the end :techman:

^It's what the entire industry works on, sure the BBC can afford to pay a little less attention to them, but you expect them to just throw away the industry standard?

yep 6.49 million viewers is Solid work and part 2 will be similar due to the lower share so the finals won't increase as much.
