Initial numbers and share beat last week's numbers :techman:

The Time of Angels was watched by 6.8 million viewers according to unofficial overnight figures.

The total share was 36.7%.

BBC One had 6.5 million watching with an additional 0.3 million watching on BBC HD. Doctor Who was again the second most watched programme of the day with Britain's Got Talent getting 10.5 million. Third placed was Casualty with 5.5 million watching.

Last week inital numbers scored...

6.2 million viewers and 32.7%

Still waiting for Victory of Daleks final numbers but so far

Episode One - 10.08 million viewers and Episode Two 8.42 million viewers.

Daleks is expected to hit around 8 million so this one should be higher.

As for the Norton fiasco well heres some interesting news...

The appearance seems to be a bid by the BBC to prevent viewers leaving the channel once Doctor Who has aired. Last week nearly two million viewers left BBC One at the end of Victory of The Daleks.

BUT

The cartoon Graham Norton didn't prevent over two million leaving BBC One once Doctor Who finished. The average audience for BBC One between 7.00-7.05 was 7.01 million and the average between 7.05-7.10 was 4.81 million

A number of comments on Twitter have complained about the intrusion with critic Charlie Brooker tweeting "Why don’t the BBC just wipe s*** all over the screen during the final scene of Dr. Who next week? I hope Moffat is bellowing down a phone to someone right now." Simon Pegg, who starred in The Long Game, added "Congrats to the BBC for ruining the climax to Doctor Who with a cartoon Graham Norton telling about another xxxxxx talent show."

 BBC ey

Seems like Smith's kind of like Peter Davison; following in the footsteps of a popular predecessor, with somewhat lower but still-stable ratings.

Seems to me that a 36 % share of the viewing audience is nothing to sneeze at.

Meh. It's not like Who is in any danger. Some drop-off over Tennent's departure was inevitable as he's probably the most beloved Doctor since Tom Baker.

The BBC often promotes programmes in this way but the corporation has acknowledged that in this case the scheduling was inappropriate.

A BBC spokesman said: "We apologise for the timing of Saturday night's trail."

 Idiots.

It has always been hard for me to understand tv ratings data.

How does this compare to previous episodes, including from Tennant's run? How does it compare to last week, etc? Is this considered a goldmine or a ghost town as far as ratings are concenred?

if the BBC wants to stop Doctor Who fans from switching off or switching too another channel when the show ends, maybe it should stop airing Doctor Who: Confidential straight after it on BBC 3, I know that it would stop me from switching to BBC 3, when the show ends, cant promise I would watch Over the Rainbow however.

More good news from the latest episode...

The Time of Angels scored an Appreciation Index figure of 87, the highest of the series so far.

The score was the highest of the day on either of the two main BBC channels.

Still waiting for finals on TVOD.

These numbers are only soft numbers for now as BARB will post final numbers sometime next week for "The Time of Angels". BBC being publicly funded is not supposed to care about ratings that much but the share is the key figure to look at, much in the same way American networks focus on the demo over total viewers. Doctor Who numbers are huge for the UK landscape in this day and age so in American terms consider Doctor Who (CSI or even Lost in the first 4 years).

Doctor Who since 2005 has seen a small drop off from the audience but for all overall really these numbers are virtually similar for what the BBC has seen over the past 5 years. The show always wins its direct slot and 1st or 2nd in the overall day slot and top 10/15 for week slot (soaps take up large portions of top 10).

The numbers for the season finales and X mas specials were the highpoints of DT era so I guess we will see the true test of smith come 4x13 and the 2010 Christmas special.

As for previous episodes these were the final numbers of 4x01 and 4x02...

The Eleventh Hour - 10.08 million viewers

The Beast Below - 8.42 million viewers

TVOD (4x03) and this episode should hit 8 million for finals too.

The continuity announcer said that over 8 million watch last week episode(VOTD) in the lead up to this weeks episode...i don't know how official that is though....but i think once we get the official numbers in we will certainly see 8 million easy for these episodes.

It's good to know the BBC are reminding people when it's time to turn over, but it's just the timing that was a problem.

Overnights of 6.5 million (which'll probably turn into 7.5 once video is counted in) are pretty much as per previous seasons for this pont in the season: slightly better given that the last few seasons ran later in the day, which always boosts the ratings.

From the department of Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics: This means that at least one viewer in every thousand has complained to the BBC about the Graham Norton cartoon.

I'm hoping viewership will pick up a bit once people start accepting Matt as the Doctor. Still, those numbers are nothing to be ashamed of.

Final numbers and these are higher than I prediced...

The Time of Angels watched by 8.59 million viewers.

The programme got 8.13 million viewers on BBC One, where it was the fifth most watched programme for the channel for the week. An additional 0.46 million watched on BBC HD

So far...

The Eleventh Hour - 10.08 million

The Beast Below - 8.42 million

Victory of the Daleks - 7.82 million

Time of The Angels - 8.59 million
