The ratings are in and while not as strong as I expected...good news :techman:

Doctor Who launched to 8 million viewers and a 36.90% share according to the BBC.

UK early ratings for Doctor Who is often low for the 1st call so expect this to go up. Also great news that over 1 in 3 people watching TV had Doctor Who on the screen. BBC I Player and repeat viewings will proibably be healthy too...

Rival ITV with Harry Hill’s TV Burp hit 3.5 million viewers (down 40% in overnight figures on the previous week)

David Tennant finale scored 10.40 million viewers,

Season 1 [2005]: 9.9m
Season 2 [2006]: 8.0m
Season 3 [2007]: 8.2m
Season 4 [2008]: 8.4m
Season 5 [2010]: 8.0m

No surprised a drop but since 5 million is a hit in the UK there is no worry and WOM will push the series up as it contiues in my opinion.

Well the second highest number for the day was five point something million, so I'm happy. At least the show didn't lose ground. Be interested in hearing the AI.

The consolidated viewing figures released in around 10 days time (which take into account PVR and other recorded viewings) will probably show the final rating being around 8.4-8.6m.

I was expecting around 7.6m, so not too bad. I think it would be up significantly if it were shown slightly later in the evening. It would be great if we could get back to how it was during the first two or three series where it was almost always on at 7pm, not only would there be more people watching TV at that time, but it would be a regular slot with no confusion for viewers. Unfortunately, BBC One controller Jay Hunt and her schedulers are using Doctor Who to prop up the rest of the Saturday night schedules as a lead-in audience, when to maximise the Who audience the easiest thing to do would be to swap Doctor Who and Over The Rainbow's timeslots.

Harry Hill's TV Burp? oy, what the hell is that?

Something wonderful. Though beginning to get a little long in the tooth...

Harry needs a fresh gig. Perhaps Who beckons? ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Hill's_TV_Burp
given that he just signed a 2 year contract with ITV, TV Burp or Harry isnt going anywhere.

However its worthy putting that figure into context for our international friends who are not aware of TV Burp, so would not know that, the episode aired was a "Best of Harry Hills TV Burp" not a new episode. However that is true of last weeks episode was well.

The ratings are affected by the weather and the timeslot - earlier is usually lower.

These are good ratings- a 36% share is pretty spectacular, and it's the most-watched programme of easter Saturday on any channel, and the 8th or so of the week- and the only programme of the week's top ten that isn't either Eastenders or Corrie.

not seen the Top 10 for the week, but wouldnt the Sunday episode of "A Touch of Frost" going to be in the Top 10 as well?

If I could be bothered I would browse this thread and build a Top 10, but I cant, not at the moment, maybe later.

Sundays A Touch of Frost was 7.2 million 28.2%, whilst the BBC 3 repeat of The Eleventh Hour was 0.67 million. 3.3% which seems respectable.

edit:

ok I have compiled a Top 10 list for this week, but only because someone on Digital Spy had already done Monday - Thursday, so it was easy for me to add Friday, Saturday & Sunday, I was wrong Sundays "A Touch of Frost" was not Top 10 worthy, neither was Ashes to Ashes or Jonathan Creek, but Doctor Who was good for 9th, and of course the 1st on Saturday.

Top 10 Overnights, Monday to Sunday
01 - 9.5m (40.7%) - Coronation Street, ITV1
02 - 9.4m (36.6%) - EastEnders, BBC1
03 - 9.1m (36.0%) - Coronation Street, ITV1
04 - 8.6m (36.3%) - EastEnders, BBC1
05 - 8.4m (35.0%) - EastEnders, BBC1
06 - 8.3m (36.0%) - Coronation Street, ITV1
07 - 8.0m (31.8%) - Coronation Street, ITV1
08 - 7.9m (34.7%) - EastEnders, BBC1
09 - 7.7m (34.7%) - Doctor Who, BBC1
10 - 7.6m (30.6%) - Coronation Street, ITV1
as a nation we really need to watch less Corrie & EastEnders

The 2nd part tonight of the last ever Frost will probably be bigger so Doc Who could be piped out of the top 10. I wonder how Creek did against Frost, not well am assuming maybe 5-6 million.

true however it is Monday tonight, so that rating is part of a new week.

the ratings for Jonathan Creek were:

20:00 - Jonathan Creek: 5.5m (21.3%) BBC 1
20:00 - A Touch of Frost: 7.2m (28.2%) ITV 1

it is true, both soaps do seem to be pretty much, unaxeable.

The BBC 3 repeat of Eastenders is usually good for at least 700,000; and Eastenders Live was something like 16 million.

back to Doctor Who, compared to previous season openers I thought the ratings were low, but it was the No1 show of the day by a large figure, and when all the figures are adding up it willl push 9 million.

7,700,000 + 670,000 is already 8,370,000

so the Eleventh Hour is no failure.

We certainly need to not count every showing as a separate show

So are you saying all those listings of Eastenders/Coronation Street are multiple showings of the same episodes of each?
no each listing is one episode, Eastenders is 4 episodes a week (plus repeats on BBC 3 & the Sunday Omnibus) whilst Corrie is a 5 episode a week show (plus various ITV 2 repeats, and the Omnibus, which itself gets repeated plenty)

Not too mention Corra has 2 episodes a night on Thursdays I think so you could count them as one episode.

I see...I figured those were kind of like American soaps where they are on multiple days a week...
