Tuvok: how would you have fleshed out his role?

"Bliss" comes to mind where he is bounced from the bridge scenes to sickbay after the Doctor is taken offline and then back to the bridge to man the helm in short order. The guy needed a raise.

Maybe that's what it took to get promoted aboard Voyager.

For the first few seasons there were virtually no blue shirts aboard a science vessel. Until after they got the surplus DS9 uniforms. :p

True. However I was specifically talking about Sam Wildman, who first appeared in the fourth episode of season two and then off-and-on through season six. AFAICT, the only "blue shirt" named character that appeared on-screen before she appeared was Crewman Gerron from Learning Curve who probably isn't life sciences as she is.

Though airdate she appeared first in season 2, it was the tail end of season 1 production that she appeared. "ELOGIUM" was the second of 4 produced 'holdover' season 1 episodes.

The point is still very valid, but when you think about it as her first appearance really being season 1, it makes the fact she wasn't made a nurse MUCH more glaring.

Harry must have been one lazy SOB then when not on screen. He just smiled for the camera.

For sure. Caretaker showed us quite a few blue shirts. Sickbay especially. Then they all died.

I really liked Tuvok and Seven's interactions in Year of Hell and Tsunkatse. I would have liked to have seen them talk more, particularly in Season 4 when Seven didn't like being around humans that much.

A good Tuvok thread to explore would have been him and Chakotay ironing out their disagreements regarding Maquis in positions of importance. But that would have required that Chakotay actually undergo some character development.

If Voyager had effective security, it would be like Aurora's parents just sending Maleficent an invite to the party: very prudent, but not much of a story.

Maybe I would have opted for Tuvok to be seen improving security onboard Voyager by providing mental exercises for the crew in the form of meditation for greater emotional control and the ability to resist mental assaults through use of telepathic abilities from potential enemies... and prevent mind reading in the process.

We know Gul Dukat was trained to resist mind reading, so I'm actually surprised that SF officers aren't trained in similar methods (they'd still retain more open minds than say Cardassians, but would otherwise have the ability to shield themselves in case a mental probing is 'hostile').

We are told Tuvok was an instructor at the academy but outside of "Learning Curve" we don't really see him doing any training. "Night" feels like a missed opportunity. They have two years where they aren't expecting to have any emergencies. It would make sense for Tuvok and Chakotay to organise cross-training everyone so that everyone can work in different departments to usual. I would have liked to have seen that. I like "Night" but I think they could have made an episode before that about the first two months in the void.

The crew could have spent a a few weeks in that section of space before encountering the Malon and the subsequent shortcut. We could have seen what you mentioned and also the crew being showed doing research and development on new science and technologies for example - which could foreshadow the Quantum Slipstream v2 as seen a few weeks later.

The first 2 or 3 seasons had these kinds of moments where things from one episode lead to others that were fleshed out in the future.

I would have had Harry diss T’Pel and Tuvok march across the bridge and slap him, then shout at him about mentioning his wife.

Of course this is all a psychic assault/affliction which the crew must defeat as allegory to something.
