Trying to track down an obscure toy I remember from childhood.

This is going to be difficult, as I don't know much about it, nor did I even own it. I just saw it in a toy store a few times (maybe even only once).

First off, it was a red sports car, about the size of a Transformer (but, and this is important, it was not a transformer). It could however transform into a kind of jet (it was also not a MASK toy). I think it had a third transformation but I can't really remember enough to explain it.

Also it took batteries, I'm pretty sure to make it drive on it's own. That's all I can remember, and to make it worse, it was in a toy store that doesn't normally carry brand name toys.

I would appreciate any help on this matter as it's something I'd love to be able to remember.

I can't answer your question, but you might try asking over at Transformer World 2005. They have a lot of people who know their transforming toys that aren't name-brand Transformers.

Do you remember when you saw it in a store? Even a rough time-frame (ex. a five year period) might help in your search.

I was living in Washington still (I mean, I know I am now, but this was before I moved away).

So I'd say about 87-92. Just to give you a rough five period time frame.

Did it transform to a robot at any point? Do any of these lines look familiar? Or maybe starcom?

I looked through that list and while I did see a lot of old toys I used to have. No, it wasn't any of those.

And I remember quite clearly it did not turn into a robot. I recall that because at the time I thought it would have been cooler if it also turned into a robot.

No, afraid not. This car did not turn into a robot.

There was a line of Transformers late in series which IIRC didn't have robot modes but did rotate through several vehicle modes. Can't remember what hte line was called though, but it might be what you're thinking of. Some TF-fans post more in TV & Media and/or SF&F, so you might want to try there too, if you don't get lucky here.

I think I remember those. I had a couple of toy cars that turned into planes or a motorcycle.

Was it the red Key Force car? That's the best I could suggest if it's not the M.A.S.K. Thunderhawk vehicle. Hot Wheels did KF in '93, so they both would fit into your timeline. Hope this helps.

I remember the KF. However, the OP mentioned that it was the size of a transformer (I assume the standard ones instead of the tiny ones like they put in the happy meals). Dang, I remember those, but I can't recall the name now.

Well, the size range should be right if we're talking about an "average" sized car Transformer. I could be wrong on that, but those are typically medium-sized figures compared to the smaller ones (i.e. smaller versions of Bumblebee or Cliffjumper).
