There was an episode of TNG in which the Enterprise somehow finds a little girl who survived the destruction of another Federation starship in some kind of nebula. This nebula is known for having destructive energy waves where lots of shielding is required to protect a starship.
The little girl blames herself for the destruction of the other ship, thinking she did something to cause the diasaster. Something or other keeps the Enterprise within the nebula, and they keep having to increase power to the shields to fend off the destructive energy waves.
When the waves become so powerful the Enterprise is about to be destroyed, the little girl points out that the other ship kept doing the same thing, increasing power to the shields, and Data has a realization. He realizes that the energy waves are caused by the shields themselves, and immediately drops them. The energy waves pass harmlessly through the Enterprise.
