True Sportsmanship

A touching story out of Women's Softball reminds us of the true meaning of sportsmanship. Sara Tucholsky, a senior out of Western Oregon University, belted her first home run with two on and a shot at the playoffs. She was excited and missed first base. To avoid being called out, she tried to return and touch first, tearing her knee in the process. The umpire ruled that if any of her own team tried to help her, it would be an out and the homerun wouldn't count. That would prove to be unneccessary as two of the opposing players carried Sara around the bases so she the homerun would count. Such gestures are a rarity these days. Brava, fine ladies of Central Washington University. You might not have won, but you showed us how the game is supposed to be played!

Sportsmanship

I was about to post a thread about this story myself, when I decided to take a second look and be sure it wasn't already out here. Fantastic that other people have heard about and read about this story, too. It's been showing up everywhere. On the Net, in my local paper, etc. A couple of other notes... apparently the coach for Western Oregon U could have put in a substitute runner for his injured player. But that would have made the home run a single, and he wasn't about to take away a home run from a girl who had jsut hit the first one of her career there.

There are times when I wonder if the best sportsmen are really women. Way to go, ladies. Life at its finest!!

Here is another video report, that also brings out just how superb an example of what is good about sports. So often, sports is regarded as the province of men and boys. That's changing, thank goodness. It's a truly good thing that one of the finest examples of sportsmanship in the history of sport, is demonstrated by a group of young women. Women who have no multi-million dollar career waiting for them. Women who devoted themselves to their sport no less than did their brethren, regardless of the sport. It's good to know that you can find these examples no matter where you go, and no matter what gender is involved.

BTW... at the end of the above link, you learn that the three principle people involved, the injured Sara Tucholsky and Central Washington's Liz Wallace and Mallory Holtman all three made academic all-conference 1st team.

The Spirit of Sportsmanship indeed well done ladies.:techman::techman::techman::techman:
If you were my daughters I'd be very proud of you., you have taught a lesson to all.

I enjoyed how the Western Oregon coach gets all choked up in his part of that second video clip. You can tell he's feeling that this has been worth it, because the women under his charge have learned a lesson far greater than he might have imagined.

They will have some one-on-one time with an ambassador to Major League Baseball. Roger Clemens will to meet and personally thank each one of those young ladies; and as an added bonus, he's invited their little sisters to come along.
