Yeah, saw it last night. Tara's accent was so strange I thought it was satire. She's hilariously unlikable. The two african-american characters on the show are an obnoxious homosexual and a short-tempered bitch. Gee, the blood sucking monsters get off easy.

I like Anna Paquin...why is she playing Jean Grey instead of Rogue? I'll admit if she becomes a vamp next episode, I'll be disappointed.

I've got just enough interest in this one to stick around. I liked the satire of southern culture aspect of the show (even if it were unintentional) but thought the switchblade fangs were a bit silly. Are canines not edgy enough?

You will be pleasantly surprised. There are, I think 8 or 10 Sookie Stackhouse books, and she never becomes a vampire. Certainly not in the first book, which is what the first season is said to be based on.

[Spoiler="Books]There are currently 8 published Sookie Stackhouse books, plus a whole bunch of connected short stories. The 9th book is scheduled to be published early next year. Charlaine has said as long as the books keep selling, she'll keep writing, as she has ideas for many more Sookie books. As for Sookie's fate, when asked, Charlaine said that's one thing that will never happen, Sookie turning into a vampire. (source - I was there at the book signings with her) [/spoiler]

Came across this on accident last night. Nothing spectacular, but I certainly found this to be entertaining. And I'm intrigued by the premise (before opening this thread I didn't know this was based on a series of books).

It did a few things well. One was having a varied set of colorful characters without the forced quirkiness (so far) that hampers many depictions of small town life. Another was get you up to speed on the rules of this world rather quickly. The first convenience store scene establishes who the vampires are - and by showing the cashier who looked and acted in the more stereotypical way was not - jettisoned what ideas about vampires we may have carried to the show. The Bill Maher bit told us everything we needed to know to get started about why they're here.

PS - Tara's accent is pure white southerner, not black southerner, which is really totally weird to listen to.

A nice touch though. Like the quickly painted first scene, her "atypical" accent tells you a bit about the character, her background, and who she hangs around just a few sentences into her dialogue. And like the vampires, it also forces one to think about the character without bringing ones own preconceptions to the table.

But Sooky I found to be the most interesting. Not only the character herself, but in the matter-of-fact way her telepathy is handled.

So far so good. I'll give the show a chance.

I don't read spoilers and am unfamiliar with the source material, but rewatching the episode...is the bar & grill owner a were-dog. I mean, he leaves after Sookie does, yet she confronts the Rattrys and he never shows up...but the dog that lives around there does. Hmmm...but she's psychic, so she'd know if he was a were-dog. Unless he retains no memories of being in dog form.

Spoiler: Sam

Sam isn't a Were or a were-. This is something that comes up in later books. Weres (with a capital W) are werewolves. There are also weres- and they can turn into ... other animals. were-panther, were-tiger, etc. There are also shifters, which is what Sam is. Shifters are something entirely different, and have the ability to shapeshift into any form they choose. Sam prefers to be a dog. He does have a weakness - he can only shift into something he's seeing. He has a picture book open in his office at all times showing a dog, so he can shift into it at any time. Sookie doesn't know anything about any of the creatures out there other than vampires, but boy howdy are there a LOT of them. Weres, weres-, fairies, etc. Note - All this is from the books, we'll have to see how it comes across on the tv.

LaFayette has about 11 jobs. We've only seen 2 of them so far. lol
