Tribute to the Hotel Royale Extras

While Data is having a "nice stroke of luck" at the craps table, all the other gamblers, dealers and hotel staff soon flock around to see the game with varying reactions to Data and Riker, with Texas and Vanessa.

Mustached casino patron and tweed jacketed patron giving Data a congrats.

Two dealers laughing along with Texas' "I'm good-looking" joke.

"We need some spreading around money, Data..." A patron behind Riker listening in...

He raises his eyebrows in agreement with Riker's generosity.

A "little something" for Vanessa, much to her pleasure and that of the dealer behind her...

After eighteen wins, Texas is "getting off at this station" as a patron in blue clothing behind Vanessa listens in...

And when Texas decides to bet against Data, she raises her eyebrows in surprise...

While Data does not believe that is a prudent choice, a female patron shakes her head in mutual disagreement of Texas' decision...

As Data makes a final roll, he offers the dice to Vanessa as the Second Bellboy looks on...

And smiles in amusement as Vanessa gives the dice a blow for good luck, too.

Another congrats from the tweed jacketed patron behind Data.

The dealer behind Texas nodding his head about Data's caution for Texas not to bet against him...

Data cashes in for the Assistant Manager as a blonde cocktail waitress looks on...

And her mouth opens slightly in surprise, as Data has "broken the bank."

She then smiles pleasantly to Riker as the Assistant Manager recognises him and the others as the "foreign investors" who just bought the hotel.

Seems to be recognition of some good acting/direction in these scenes. Good enough for me.

Interestingly enough, I’ve always found the background extras in this episode to be interesting as well.

I think they make the episode. Without them, it's just a room. Even the speaking supporting cast are kept very superficial, but they & the extras are incredibly vibrant. They make this situation very real. I think the intention was to make them seem realer than a holodeck simulation, despite being much more limited in scope. I can totally imagine a real man like Col. Richey completely losing his mind in that Groundhog Day room every day, & ending up locking himself in his hotel room to die. It would be maddening. Before that happened to me, I see myself MUCH more engaged with those background people over time, than the focal characters.
