Even though I found the trekbbs in the late 90's I know I wasn't around for the very first year of the Trekbbs. Does anyone go that far back? What was it like and are there any old threads left from that time? If so I think it would be neat to see what was going on back then. I know we aren't supose to bring up old threads but In this case it seems like it would be neccessary if it was limited to this post.

Year one would be about April 99 through April 00 (I believe Christian created it in the March but it wasn't opened to the public until April), so trekbbs is just over 18 years old -- old enough to drink!

From memory in those days it was very much second to trektoday (which was in full swing, as DS9 season 7 and Voyager season 5 were still being aired and Insurrection had recently come out).

The earliest archive.org goes is November 99, and there were several thousand posts then: http://web.archive.org/web/19991129041336/http://trekbbs.com/

By May 2000 3 people had already been banned. http://web.archive.org/web/20021102130951/http://trekbbs.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000064.html

I believe that the forum Christian was referring to in this post: http://web.archive.org/web/20001213172700/http://trekbbs.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000065.html was the Neutral Zone's beginning.

    I still use Big Blue.

    :techman:

You know what I do miss, though?

The flashing envelope that let you know you had a private message.

    That was glorious.

While the Big Blue skin is a nice touch, It's just not the same without the font and layout. And, yes, the envelope was epic.

Not that many people around from 1999. I remember thinking they were royalty 15 years ago.

I haven't been here that long. I joined in '03. I remember that I was part of the TrekWeb forums, and some people that were pissed at how this place was run came there and complained about it. It was known as "The place across the street" or something like that. It was in fashion to make fun of TrekBBS for some reason. The moderators were dumb and members had ranks based on post count, and for some reason, that was lame and something to sneer at.

It was probably partly-motivated over jealousy because TrekBBS had better forum software and a larger community. That's why I joined here, at any rate. There seemed to be more discussion and the software was less of a pain to use.

I remember this place being fun and informative, but rather clique-ish. It still is clique-ish to an extent, but more in the sense of "old friends"...probably because with the advent of social media, many members know each other better over a long period of time.

I've never been part of The Neutral Zone, so I've never seen that side of the BBS. But I do remember a much rowdier version of Misc., and a time when Misc. was chockablock full of "relationship discussions." People always seemed to have dating issues and discussed them here back in the day. It was...odd. I have no idea if that still occurs, or whether that was a relic of the early-mid 2000's version of the BBS community.

That sure was a trip down memory lane - TLE getting his knickers in a twist was always a hoot.

I see from my original profile that I've been hanging around here for sixteen years.
