Trek themes in the news

Not seeing a Trek connection to speak of here, so I'm going to move this to Science and Technology.

Also, @Laura Cynthia Chambers , I should take this opportunity to encourage you to maybe focus on starting fewer threads at a time, with a little more substance to them. I've been letting them go thus far because some of them have been leading to good discussions, but there is a blurry line where starting lots of threads with content-light OPs becomes a form of spam.

Thanks.

I wasn't sure where to put this, but it'd be a good idea-spawner for a Trek story.

All these threads are me finally sharing the thoughts I've had about Trek prior to creating an account on this site with other fans.

Space science averts a disaster.

More like a lack of space science almost leading to disaster. Meanwhile, the work of Kristian Birkeland (1867-1917) is still being brushed aside today.

The Coronal Mass Ejection in question is dated 23 May 1967, yet the Van Allen belts were confirmed in 1958 by the Explorer probes. Granted, Operation Fishbowl (1962) might have given a twitchy military reason to believe the radio jamming was caused by the Soviets. Months later (24 October 1967) the breakup of a Soviet Mars probe was thought to be a nuke, but computers calculated the trajectory of the debris and pegged it as a false alarm.

Things were definitely hair-trigger during the Cold War.

Good job it wasn't a Carrington event as the disruption to communication systems might have been interpreted as being caused by deliberate EMP as a prelude to first strike. It's possible we dodged one of those events in 2012 and potentially we remain vulnerable today as the Russians are reported to be still using Perimeter.

The TV series The Greatest American Hero featured a similar system in the US named "Operation Spoilsport." (16m 39s)

Yeah, I think a Carrington level event would be very disruptive. Such an event may have knocked out the dinosaur internet and TV, which is why none of them were prepared for the incoming Giant Meteor.

But what if it contains some weird unknown/undetectable radiation/chemical that comes off it in close proximity to Earth?

I intend this thread to collect ideas from the news as jumping off points for Trek ideas.

Like what? That comet that turned people into powder in Night of the Comet? Or the strange space radiation that turned people into zombies in Night of the Living Dead?

This is the sci/tech forum. Not the Trek story ideas forum.

@Laura Cynthia Chambers I think at this point it's safe to say nobody sees any need to discuss this topic and you've just been resurrecting the thread with link dumps. I'll euthanize the thread instead of letting it die an even longer death.

@tharpdevenport Don't try to mini-mod. ;) Just hit the report button.
