Trek Platform gaming

Hey guys, It's been a while since i tracked the Paramount licensing. Does anyone have the facts regarding who owns the video game licenses for what incarnations of Trek and for what platforms/PC's? Does Cryptic have an exclusive Trek license?

I'm playing a number of PS3 games and just scratching my head as to why nobody is making an 'Uncharted' or 'Assasin's Creed' style Trek game for the PS3...

It's not just Trek, BSG would translate SO well to these types of games but nothing in development!?

They probably feel that such a game won't make money/the market isn't there

I'm not sure I can really see a Trek platformer work, honestly. However, something more along the lines of Metroid Prime (perhaps with the running and jumping toned down) could work, I think.

There was a surprisingly good DS9 platformer released in the mid 90s called Crossroads of Time on the SNES and maybe Genesis. It wasn't brilliant, but it was certainly far more playable than you might have thought. No one seems to remember it now though...

Why would an Uncharted, or Assasin's Creed be successful, but the same type of game with Trek characters and environments NOT be? If it's a good game, with a passable story, great graphics and engaging gameplay, why would the Trek connection be a negative?

Certainly on the Nintendo platforms the license has been woefully neglected. We got a misguided attempt to port Starfleet Command to the DS and a board game that could have been more than it was on the Wii.

I'd love to see some kind of story-driven game involving exploration with a focus on characters. The closest thing we've had to that in years are the Elite Force games and really they're just shooters, but at least there was some kind of attempt at story and focus on characters rather than yet another ship-combat game; which, as much as I enjoy them, isn't what Trek is all about.

I couldn't agree more Sean. The games I have been playing are as much narrative and character as they are action and puzzle solving. Seems like a natural for Trek and BSG for that matter.

As I said in another thread, a Star Flight \ Star Control 2 type game would be perfect for Trek...in fact both of these games are more Trek than just about every Trek game, as they feature exploring unknown space and finding different ways to deal with aliens. Sometimes bullying works...sometimes sucking up. Yes, there's combat...but there's lots of exploration.

I've heard people tout Mass Effect as a good template for a Trek game, but never having played, I can't say for sure
