Trek in the Heartland

Here is a photographic present for all my Niner friends. I'm not sure how long this sign has been up, but it's just outside a town I pass through almost every day on my way home from work, and I just noticed it last week, so hopefully not too long. Just thought you'd all enjoy knowing that Trek fandom is alive and well even in rural Indiana.

Good find, JK. Though things are evidently rough for Starfleet Command if it's having to subsidise itself through the highway system...

The Cardinal Bird wears command red, so possibly it represents Sisko? ;)

HAHAH Kate, that is awesome! I'm not totally familiar with what a highway in rural Indiana will look like, is it just miles of straight road or are there any properties on it?

Awesome! Isn't Indiana where Janeway is from?

Ooh, what a memory! I'm sorry to admit that I had no recollection of this, but according to Trek Nation, it is indeed Bloomington, Indinana, which is about...oh, maybe 60-70 miles south of where I found this sign.

You poor foreigner. ;) The sign refers to a program in which local individuals, families, businesses, clubs and, apparently, runabouts - or someone who strongly identifies with that runabout - "adopts" a particular stretch of highway. By that I mean they make themselves responsible for picking up litter and so on along that particular section. So this just shows that the Defiant wants to give back to the community, though why it's so fond of Lapel, Indiana (the town that starts right over that little rise you can see behind the sign), is something of a mystery.

The cardinal is, BTW, Indiana's state bird, but I'm sure whoever adopted this part of the highway appreciates that bright red, just as you do, DN.

So now I'm a-dyin' to know who this person might be, but I think I might enjoy speculating about him/her even more.

Oh, sure - there are houses and businesses and so on, but I have to tell you that what there is mostly is lots and lots of corn. And soybeans. And corn. And soybeans. And now and then some wheat or a little alfalfa. Personally, I think it's pretty, but then as we've probably already realized by now, I'm odd.

Heartland? Is that the place of cholesterol-induced coronary infarction?

:p

:p back at you!

Nice find, JK!

Thanks. It makes me snicker every time I go through there - and I'm pretty sure that was the whole idea.

It is nice to see a sign (pun intended) that interest in Star Trek is still strong. I'm not sure how much fandom the new movie(s) generate(s) for the tv series, which are the core of Star Trek content (but if it's a gateway into those series, great). Do they beam up the garbage or what?

And this is a general question, but what is up with yellow or orange beaked cardinals? Every cardinal I've ever seen in person or in actual photos has a reddish beak, not yellow, not orange either, yet every print depiction of cardinals have yellow to orange beaks, including the St. Louis Cardinals and the Arizona Cardinals, and bags of bird seed too.

If that's the state bird, I suspect they used an imbecilic changeling that couldn't get the cardinal quite right as the model.

And Heartland, I thought that was a Canadian drama series.

Cool find! Although I think the registration number is all wrong for the USS Defiant;).

Nerding aside, its great to see that there are some fun and interesting ways of keeping the DS9 flame alive. Mind you, if I had been there and had the money for it, I would have adopted a part of that highway for the Second Order of the Central Command. (Dukat picking up litter, priceless:lol:)

I assumed it was the state bird (glad I was right). Although life over the pond is strange and disturbing :shifty: (though evidently quite efficient when it comes to roadside de-littering), I was able to work that out at least ;)

Wait a minute...so you're merely cleaning the roads rather than making money through them? You're supposed to be a nation of crazed capitalists! Stop picking up litter and start crafting localized business empires! ;)

Mind you, if I had been there and had the money for it, I would have adopted a part of that highway for the Second Order of the Central Command. (Dukat picking up litter, priceless:lol:)

Make it the Obsidian Order; have it implied that something sinister is going on. What is that litter being collected for anyway?

As for Dukat, he's busy being a pink pony at present (no seriously, in the Misc forum. It's horrifying).

" The trash is being cleared up for your own good citizen, just look the other way."

-The Obsidian Order. Keeping everything clean for longer than you care to think about.

...now move along citizen.

I plan from now on to imagine that that's exactly what they do. Hey, I have a 45-minute commute - a gal's gotta have some fun.

After seeing this reply, I googled "cardinal bird images," and while most of the photos showed red or at least reddish beaks, some were orange. I will, thanks to you, notice this every time I see a cardinal for the next year at least, so if I see any non-red beaks first hand, I'll let you know.

Of course, if I do, maybe those will be changelings, too? I plan from now on to imagine that that's exactly what they are. Thanks for enriching my commute even more!

:rommie:

And now, thanks to you, Thor, for enriching my commute even further.

It's not too late. I'm sure there're lots of unadopted stretches of Indiana highway...

Actually, I don't think you have to pay any money. I am pretty sure you just have to provide the labor to keep your particular stretch of road tidy. So it would cost you nothing, Thor, except the minor matter of transporting yourself from England to Indiana. Piece of cake, right?

When are we going to have transporter technology anyway?

This is super heartening :adore:

I know. Isn't it adorable?

I wonder what the 630-D references.

I do NOT know. I've been thinking and thinking. A three-digit number automatically makes me think of an area code, but "630" isn't the area code for Lapel, nor for anywhere even sort of close to Lapel. It's the area code for NE Illinois (Chicago area), which is a good 2.5-3 hours away at least. So I don't know. Birthday (June 30)? Street address? (Though there's no "D" street in Lapel - I checked that, too, and besides, it's not the kind of town that would have a "D" street.) Part of a formula for faster-than-light travel? Yet another mystery.

Wait a minute...so you're merely cleaning the roads rather than making money through them? You're supposed to be a nation of crazed capitalists! Stop picking up litter and start crafting localized business empires! ;)

We are capitalists, but we're not actually "crazed." Most of us, anyway. Well, most of the time. Besides, some of us like tidy streets.

You guys - all of you - crack me up!

Awesome!

However...if I saw an Obsidian Order sign, while I know that's a fictional organization it would still creep me out. Yikes. No. Just no.

Well, pleasant suburban environs and a sense of community are also an American stereotype, so your lack of ScroogeMcDuckery will be overlooked. :p Now if you'll excuse me, I must go drink tea and postpone my next dental appointment :D

Seriously, though, this does seem like a great idea - particularly if it gets us Deep Space Nine references. I still insist the Cardinal is Sisko. Not only is it command red, it has appropriate religious overtones. :)

Yes, I suppose if you did actually see one, it would be quite disquieting...sort of like spotting a sign with the name of a serial killer. A bit of an "...okay" moment.

Mind you, if you didn't have the symbol or mention star trek anywhere then non-DS9 fans (and there are some Shockingly!), might perhaps think that it is merely an over the top group that really, really prizes very clean roads.

(of course you would not have the scary, ominous signage. Best not to worry people eh?)

Well, creepy or not (and yes, it would be creepy) I think a Tal Shiar sign would be pretty much the coolest thing ever...

And as I thought that, I said to myself, "I wonder if anybody has made a collection of images of odd adopt-a-highway signs?" The answer, of course, is yes. Here's one: http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/30-strange-adopt-a-highway-signs

Note that there are at least Trek-related signs. Naturally. My favorite, however, may be "Calculus Forever."

I think that's my favourite, too. Strangely, that one is also somewhat creepy. I don't quite know why. Maybe it just brings to mind some glazed-eyed mathematician advancing at slow but steady pace, muttering obsessively...

"Yahwah's 666 Warning Assembly" sounds pretty fun, though.
