Trek crew members that irl would be fired for being psychotic

john titor

Captain
Just a few examples offhand.

Data, this guy was an android sociopath. The episode where he shoots the collector/trader dude in mid transport, then lies about it to Riker. What about the time he killed his own brother, he could have just de-activated him and have him disassembled/stored in a federation lab but no he goes out of his way to permanently terminate a member of his own family. He's also had several "malfunctions" eg stabbing Troi onboard the enterprise. Surely irl he would have been kicked out star fleet for being too unreliable?

7 of 9, there were so many incidents with this one. She would just go off on a personal crusade because she was a borg and somehow that justified her endangering the rest of the crew.

Janeway/Archer, complete nutters in space, a litany of diplomatic incidents, instellar gaffs and foolhardy, frankly stupid tactics.

Only the TOS crew were stable, their lapses in duty were usually justifiable and seldom. This was back in a time when men were men.

Kirk's rather self-centered. New Kirk is an out-and-out sociopath.

Spock jeopardized his crew and especially his captain by not being more open about a medical problem in Amok Time. Substitute pon farr with schizophrenia and see how tremendously irresponsible Spock was for keeping this information from McCoy.

Marla McGivers was some kind of crazy.

Riker and Pulaski should've been charged with some form of homicide for their actions in Up the Long Ladder.

And of course Sisko could have faced charges for conspiracy and obstruction for his role in the death of Vreenak and the holo-artist. It's also highly likely he greatly exceeded the rules of engagement when he used chemical warfare to poison a Maquis planet.

The whole lot of TOS' crew would be fired for tormenting their crewmate with endless racist jokes.

Their habit of laughing uproariously at the end of each episode regardless of the death toll they've witnessed is pretty damn sociopathic, too.

if I were on the TOS crew or any of these guys crews and the Human Rights Act were around i'd have them all up on charges and win

Hilarious! I am trying to diagnose that Gene Coon bridge-chuckle-scene phenomenon. Some sort of compartmentalization/denial thing?

Kirk - nymphomaniac.

Scotty - alchoholic.

McCoy - misanthopic, technophobic.

Chekov - nationalistic obsessiveness

Sulu - ADHD (how many hobbies?)

Uhura - total absence of personality

Spock - species identity disorder, paternal relationship issues

Chapel - obsessive infatuation issues with a senior officer

LOL at TOS and Geordi. Very funny. Still the best crew in starfleet, they showed the aliens how its done!

new Kirk is a bit weird, but he does have some element of empathy, he did rescue Sulu, I'd say he suffers from a severe form of attention deficit disorder.

The Doctor had a good few malfunctions.

Does this mean the only stable crew memeber is...???

Miles O Brien?
Harry Kim?
Hoshi Sato?
Uhura?

Well, IRL Miles O'Brien would probably be suffering severe psychological illness as a result of all he's had to endure (torture, false memories etc). But I don't recall any on screen evidence of problems, so on that criteria he gets a clean bill of health.

Like wise Harry Kim. Near death experiences can be incredibly traumatic (though some people are able to cope with little or no ill effect). Given the number of times he's actually been killed, I'd expect some effect on him. But that would come perilously close to 'character development', which I understand the makers of Voyager were not keen on.

Uhura had her brain wiped by Nomad, which you'd think would have some long term effects. Apparently not. Shall we retcon this to say her memories were merely inaccessible for a while?

Hoshi Sato was perhaps ill suited for deep space exploration to begin with, but with time she seemed to adapt.

Yeah...but when your options are to either go insane with grief or laugh it off, what are you going to go with?

But she was kidnapped and tortured and forced to help the Xindi reptilians access the codes to launch The Weapon! ... Post-traumatic stress?

^ Good point.

Looking at this thread, I'm beginning to see why they started putting counsellors on starships!
