Trek cliches

I could buy them using plasma for power distribution for high powered devices, like the deflector dish, but for crew stations? First of all, we have displays that can do pretty much all of that stuff now, and they run just fine on electricity. Secondly, we already have the technology to pipe electricity large distances, so it isn't going to be a problem on a starship.

"Fascinating". One of Spock's favorite words.

"No tribble at all". Famous phrase uttered by Scotty.

"Make it so". Famous phrase uttered by Captain Picard.

"Temporal anomaly". Used in various Star Trek series, probably most often in Voyager. It's a good answer when you've got time issues. "Sorry, I'm suffering from a temporal anomaly!"

"Lay in a course, to/heading..." Said by numerous Star Trek captains. It's probably used by captains of naval vessels, but if anyone ever says it I instantly think of a Starfleet captain giving orders to the navigator.

"Food replicator". I used to work with a guy that referred to the vending machines as food replicators. Yeah, it definitely over-branded him as a Star Trek nerd. I used to remind him that they are food "dispensers" not replicators, but he refused to listen.

"Gundun." Phonetic for "GNDN", the term used for various conduit props on Star Trek sets. "Goes Nowhere, Does Nothing." Useful to describe useless employees at work. "Jim? Oh, he's a gundun. I don't know what the hell he does and he's always sitting there. I guess he's just paid to show up."

Only once, so I don't see how it constitutes a cliche. (Although he did come close in TAS: "More Tribbles, More Troubles," with his closing line, "But you've got to admit, if we've got to have tribbles, it's best if all our tribbles are little ones.")

I've never heard that used at all, so again, how is it a cliche?

Like management!

Believe it or not, "cli·ché" is a multi-faceted word, which can also mean:
1 : a trite phrase or expression; also : the idea expressed by it
2 : a hackneyed theme, characterization, or situation

^How does that contradict my point? "Trite" and "hackneyed" both mean stale or ineffective due to overuse. If a phrase was never used at all, it cannot be trite, hackneyed, or cliched.

Well, you seem hell bent on wanting this, so if it'll make you happy here you go:

Mind you, the OP did not qualify the scope of cliches. GNDN became a cliche among my friends and I thought I'd just share it here, because I thought it to be funny. And apparently at least one person did. What harm did that do? :wtf:

Well, why didn't you just say so in the first place instead of being needlessly insulting? I mean, come on, I can't read your mind. I asked a legitimate question about why you considered that a cliche. If you'd just said before what you said here, we could've avoided some unnecessary negativity. Next time, try explaining first.

Guys, I know we're all nerds on some level here, but arguing over something so... silly? :p

Gary7, I think you've fundamentally misunderstood my intent. I was simply asking for an explanation of why that was a cliche to you, not to attack or judge, but simply because I was puzzled and wanted to understand what you were saying. I regret that we've somehow talked past each other in a way that led you to think I had some kind of hostile intent. But I never wanted this to be an argument. I just asked a question, and you eventually gave me the answer I was looking for in the first place, so it's cool now. Okay?

Christopher, your point by point calling scrutiny to what I posted seemed to me as rather nitpicky on a thread that is intended as harmless fun, not rooted in deep Star Trek trivia debate. You then didn't want to let it go and continued. I know you're a stickler for details and often manage to uncover useful info about Star Trek, but I took this as bordering on a personal attack/insult, so I countered... Anyway, I see now that this wasn't really your intent, and so I apologize for any insults (the medal was a joke, btw). I guess we'll just have to chalk it up to the ambiguous nature of forums, where the subtle cues one makes in person are either lost or altered when distilled into mere text on an electronic board.

Thank you.

Which is why it's so important to give people the benefit of the doubt and not assume their motives are negative. Now we know... and knowing is half the battle. (Speaking of cliches...)
