Here's a chance to speculate.
Ideas are recycled all the time and always have been. Star Trek itself has borrowed previous ideas and given them a new perspective.
And so now what idea or element in Trek do you think could serve as a starting or jumping off point for a non-Trek story or film or television project?
For myself I've long been fascinated by an idea first referenced in TOS' "Balance Of Terror" and fleshed out just a bit in James Blish's adaptation of the episode. I'm referring to the references to the 22nd century war between Earth forces and the Romulans and the idea the conflict lasted for twenty-five years. I'm also intrigued by the possibility hinted at that the Romulans might not have had FTL at the time and the Earth forces might have.
I've long thought about how this could work and in my idea it's possible IF one side has fast relativistic starflight and the other has rudimentary FTL capability. And in my idea it's the aliens that have FTL.
Note, too, that relativistic space war isn't new to SF literature. The best example I know of Joe Haldeman's novel The Forever War.
Anyone else think there's a Trek idea that could be explored another way?
