Transporters in Picard

TRON JA307020

Vice Admiral
Admiral
The transporters I want to talk about are the ones at the academy. There were portal walk throughs spaced out on front of the building. People were walking in and out of them. But I kept seeing people walk right toward it when someone was just walking out. There seems to be no mechanism to stop people from bumping into each other in the transporter chamber. It seems like this was a poorly designed system. Any thoughts?

I don’t have any evidence as I didn’t pay too much attention.
But, if I were to design them, I would do so with a clear entry and exit side.
You can only go in through one side and exit through the other.
That way, even if two people would walk through at the same time, they wouldn’t bump into each other.
It could look a bit weird, as the person would appear to change into the other one.
What is less clear, is how you specify the destination address in a walking stride.

It was probably just a poorly designed system but that's in line with a lot of other dumb tech in Trek.

I suspect they buffer people for a few seconds if need be and have sensors to ensure nobody gets merged by standing too close when someone else materialises.

The Yorktown booths in Star Trek Beyond seem nicer to me, but these are probably quicker for mass transit.

I'd assume the user carries a pass device of some sort on his or her person, similar to AltParis' clumsier remote from "Non Sequitur". This would tell the transporter system where the person wants to go and whether this is allowed.

Since there are multiple portals side by side, the system would then be at liberty to materialize the user at the one where there's no conflict with incoming traffic. And "cutting it close" would be something automation excels in, and commuters today are quite familiar with.

I didn't like this transporter design. If it's that easy, why bother with a transporter room? I also don't like how fast the beaming is portrayed on this show. I liked it slower and more mysterious and awsome. Why not build an outdoor transporter room set piece?

I agree. My favorite beaming effect is the original series and next gen.

The only reason it was slower in the other shows is because they needed the time to work out the VFX. And even then, other aliens still managed a quicker transporter effect anyway.
It makes sense for Transporters to get faster as time moved on.

Especially when you are transporting around the surface of the Earth.
I'm sure you get clean signals bouncing from Signal Reapeater/Booster to final destination.

If you're beaming to and from a StarShip, it's probably going to be a bit slower due to distance and signal quality.

Transporter rooms become less and less necessary as the shows go on and tech becomes more advanced. Site-to-site beaming is the transporter equivalent of cloud computing and they do more and more of it in TNG, DS9 and Voyager.

Remember, Nemesis ended with a commbadge-sized transporter. The technology has been sucessfully miniaturised in-universe.

And the speed thing was just making it noticably more advanced than Discovery's transporter.

I think you just set coordinates in regards to your destination and just walk through it. It’s designed to be a high-tech fancy corridor basically.

Those that use the technology seem to be able to schedule their destinations ahead of time, like booking a flight. Meaning there is some sort of global transporter network involved here. Which is completely different from ship transporters.

Transporters should be getting easier, more common place and completely accessible. A transporter room on a starship serves a completely different purpose to mass transit on a planet.

Different points for service from civilian to military application.

I wouldn’t be surprised if more powerful transporters led to the Burn. More and more gets dumped into subspace, the Hobus hypernova gets eaten by red matter decalithium, and subspace...burps into dilithium
