Trakor's Fourth Prophecy

"There are signs that Trakor's Fourth Prophecy will soon come to pass, as well. Well, it is a prophecy about the Emissary. Trakor's Fourth Prophecy says that the Emissary will face a fiery trial and he'll be forced to choose..." - Vedek Yarka, Deep Space Nine, "Destiny"

Picked up on this entertaining tidbit in watching the third season episode of DS9 ("Destiny") earlier tonight. The episode was heavy regarding the whole Bajoran/prophet/emissary plot that carries over the entire series. Mostly it focused on Trakor's Third Prophecy and how it came to pass (though not quite as how Vedek Yarka interpreted it) in the episode in Cmdr. Sisko's role as Emissary.

At the end in hearing this final speech about the "fourth" prophecy I couldn't help but grin in considering the final episode of the series in which then Cpt. Sisko basically has to decide between embracing his role as Emissary in the show down with the pahwraiths/Gul Dukat and the kai and how he met a "fiery trial" in the fire caves in having to choose to confront the Bajoran anti-gods.

It would be interesting to note how far in advance DS9 was planned and mapped out by the writers in the series for how it would end and if they were giving us a nifty nitbit of entertaining foreshadowing (much like Babylon 5 being almost fully mapped out) with this beginning of the fourth prophecy prior to the end of the episode. Or, perhaps, I'm just reading too damn much into it and doing my own Vedek Yarka interpretation based on knowing what would ultimately happen in going back in spinning it in a way to fit my own thoughts on it. Unfortunately, the episode trailed to the credits and Dennis McCarthy's phenomenal score prior to more being said by the vedek.

All the same, I found it amusing enough to share as something to consider. My favorite aspect of DS9 which I enjoyed even more than the Dominion mythology is the Bajoran religious mythology that I find incredibly fascinating (of course, I have my degree in theology and history, so I would be fascinated by that where others may dislike it) and applaud them for the religious undertones throughout the series.

That's an interesting point! I never made that connection between the prophecy and the series finale. I never cared much for the whole Bajoran religious storyline when I first watched DS9. But it's grown on me over the years to the point where I see DS9 exploring the religious aspect of man in the Bajorans and a more secular ("atheist" might be a little too strong of a word) side in the Federation. It was a bit of tension that added a little more excitement and drama to the storylines in DS9 that TNG lacked with all of its "perfect" mostly human crew. I may not agree with everything each side said but it did make you stand up and take notice and actually think about what you were watching. To me, that's good storytelling. I loved it in one episode where Worf sided with Kira about things requiring faith that the others didn't seem to get. I loved "Rapture" where Sisko surprised Kai Wynn by siding with her stance about Bajor joining the Federation. The look on her face was priceless!!
