We all knew this was coming. It is a bit of a surprise that Lasseter will be back as director though.
After they put out crud like Ratatouille, Cars 2, Brave and Monsters U., I can see the rationale - all three Toy Story films have been good. Another one's a relatively safe bet...
I'm extremely happy about this. 
I have no deeper thought process. Toy Story directed by Lasseter. Good. Toy Story 2 directed by Lasseter. Good. Toy Story 3 not directed by Lasseter. Still good. Toy Story 4 directed by Lasseter. Good news. They must have come up with a story they loved. I see nothing to be upset with here.

It's a movie nobody was asking for, except maybe the board of directors at Toys R Us.

I loved Ratatouille. I thought it was charming, fun and sweet. And, as much as loved the Toy Story trilogy, I thought it ended quite well. Having ANOTHER film rather cheapens that, I think. But...there is money to be made so they will go back to that well as often as they can. I'd just rather see it end on a high note, as it did, rather than be drained dry.

Yeah, how can you follow the Trash Incinerator and saying goodbye to Andy? (well, you can do a load of shorts, those were fun. But another movie?)
You know, people were just as skeptical about the second and third movies before they came out. But they both surprised us.
As long as they have a really good idea, I'm fine with it.
Although frankly I think it'd be more interesting at this point to make it about an all new set of characters and toys, since it feels like we've already explored everything with Woody, Buzz and the others by now (not to mention mined all the possible jokes out of them).

Well, they have introduced new characters for them to play of off in each movie, so I don't see why this one would be any different.
Honestly, by the time a series like this has gotten to #4 I would start getting nervous, but I love all three of the originals so I'm actually looking forward to this.

Toys aren't people, they don't grow old or die so a continuation of their adventures with their new owner, (Bonnie) doesn't seem unreasonable.
I never made it to the third one (not a fault of the movie, just circumstances), but, by all accounts, there was decent closure. However, since I only know that second hand, I'm not at all bothered by a fourth one. They've all been good so far. As much as people want to guarantee it to go out on a high note, they've earned the right to try a fourth movie and ought to be given the benefit of the doubt that they're doing this because they think they have a good story.
Personally, I thought TV specials (a la Charlie Brown) was the smart way to go. But I'm not surprised by this.

Which is why I'm getting pretty tired of them as characters. Especially when their constant aim in life is to act dead and be played with by children, when emotionally and intellectually speaking, they themselves are more or less adults. What kind of existence is that?
(And I still don't see why Lotso was a villain in the last movie. Tiny kids are always going to play rough with toys, so isn't it entirely fair that the new toys should get the rough treatment for a while until even newer toys arrive, and the previous group can graduate to the gentler kids' area?)

(Unless, that is, the movie is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which all that's left of humans is their bones, and the toys have to confront the existential uncertainty of immortality in a world without us.)
It's not just that Toy Story 4 is an unnecessary sequel, but that Pixar has been going to the "series" well more and more after a string of successful original films. Since Toy Story 3 we've had Cars 2 and Monsters University; 2016 is Finding Dory, 2017 is now Toy Story 4, and they've also been gestating Incredibles 2 and Cars 3. Was Brave perfect? No, but it was a different story than they'd told before, and not a guaranteed hit.
