Tourist healthcare

I'm curious:
When folks come to America for vacation or whatever, and God forbid a catastrophic
medical situation arises, what happens? Do tourists carry health insurance solely
for this happenstance?

I did, back when I visited. I didn't actually need it in the end, but better safe than sorry.

I saw on the news where a pregnant English woman gave birth here in the U.S. and got a bill
for $150,000 for that error. She didn't have insurance.

What kind of pricing do these plans have? Is it kinda out of reach for a person of modest means?

Travel insurance is a must when going anywhere outside of the country you live.
Not that I do, but I could get away with it in Europe, reciprocal healthcare arrangements mean I'd be OK from that perspective. But for the US, it's as much a necessity as flights, in my eye.

Yep the last couple of times I went to the USA I had Health Insurance ( I think the last policy was in the several millions of dollars of coverage) As others have already said if you are travelling outside of your country you need Health Insurance.

It was relatively reasonable (Pretty sure it was less than the equivalent of $100) but it was ten or so years ago.

For most of my more recent vacations, like cultcross mentions, there's reciprocal arrangements in place (though I hadn't noticed my EHIC card had run out last time) - but I still have family cover insurance just in case.

Travel insurance is a must for any nation outside of the U.K.

I thought pregnant women were not allowed to board planes once they reached a certain stage in the pregnancy?
Its an old scam that some women used to use the free NHS in the UK to get citizenship for said baby and to avoid paying medical bills. The UK closed that loophole. The other loophole is still wide open, since we are the world's greatest suckers when it comes to healthcare and tourists.

Travel insurance definitely is handy, even moreso now than it has in the past. You just never know what could happen, so it's always good to have some insurance just as a precaution. If you have something like AAA or CAA, or whatever equivalent, it can really come in handy. Just go in for some travel insurance before you travel and it will cover you for the length of your trip.
