Just wondered how many people here are touch typists and how many like me are still pecking away with their two fingers, trying to find each key anew each time.

I am trying to learn touch typing again, I gave up last time once I realised that until I mastered it my typing speed dropped by quite bit. So if anyone has any tips or tricks I'd be glad to hear them.

I'd recommend Das Keyboard, completely blank keys are a great way to force you to learn touch typing :techman:

I learned touch typing in school, in seventh grade. On a manual Underwood, just like the ones you see newspaper reporters banging out stories on in old movies.

I never really tried to improve my typing once I learned the basics, though, so I can type quickly or accurately, but not both!

I can type with all my fingers and mostly without looking, but it's not something I've consciously learned how to do.

My fourth grade teacher got 18 Trash-80s because nobody else wanted them, and taught us all how to touch type. It was kind of a grueling experience, but now I type ridiculously fast. Touch typing FTW!

Self taught touch typer, though my fingers have a tendency to work faster than my brain, they just kind of auto-complete common words whether that's what I intended to type or not.

I have that problem atm.

Wow so it looks like everyone else is a touch typist, I better get practicing
As for the new keyboard, let's not try to run before I can walk lol, plus I really don't have that sort of money for a new keyboard lol

I'm a touch typist. They taught us all the way through grade school how to type. Then, I went into the corporate world and started posting here!

I type about 75 to 80 WPM on a good day, and sometimes I still have to glance at the keyboard, but it's a rare day.

You'll get there faster than you might think! :techman:

As for the price, it is pretty steep, I agree - but you have to consider the durability as well, these things are built like tanks (much like the IBM Model M keyboard from the 1980s, virtually indestructible).

Almost every standard keyboard built after 1990 is basically cheap trash compared to that standard.

I've just learned to pick it up after spending ages typing out stuff on the computer.

I can do it all without looking, although I still occasionally make mistakes.

Pretty much a touch typist. Not something I was trained for (I might have had some lessons at some point, but they never really helped). What helped me type without looking was posting here. I've just written so many messages that my fingers do the work without me even thinking.

I'm not sure how to answer because I type mainly with my two index fingers, but I don't often have to look at the keyboard. It's weird and people question me about it when they see it. I started typing with two fingers when I was 14 using chat rooms (when I first got the internet) and just got very used to it.

I never did incorporate the number keys in to my self-education, so I have to hunt and peck those. :)

I voted hunt and peck, but I guess it's more of a hybrid. I hunt and peck with my right hand, but I'm close to the "touch typing" with my left. I look down at the keyboard most of the time. I dont know my WPM.

Typing class way back in High School, on a typewriter, was one of the most useful classes I took in HS! Everything thing I've typed in the decades since then have been typed much faster than they would've been otherwise. I can't imagine the amount of time I've saved because of true touch typing.

That's just hunt and peck.

I don't even want to know why your right hand is less used to typing! :guffaw:
