TOS Vengeance

BorgMan

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Well sh!t, you've talked to him...

I've been thinking about this one for a while and when @calamity_si posted his white Vengeance, I just knew I had to do something as well. When @JJohnson posted his "what would it look like" thread, I slowly rolled into this beast.

Ckicky-the-click the image for the gallery!

This Vengeance is not twice the size; that made no sense to me. It's about one and a half times larger. The original Conny comes in at 289 meters, while this one comes in at almost 395 meters. I'll post a side-to-side comparison soon. I also opted to include the boomerang instead of it having no markings at all, but it's not so obviously red-and-yellow, instead sporting a much more blending black and grey color scheme.

All the open spaces have been filled in this version, but there are visual nods to it. The bridge and sensor dome both have recessed areas around it and those weird, open triangles have been replaced with a shuttle- and cargobay access. I realized that making them triangular would look out of character for the ship: the original's mimicked the open space around the bridge, so I decided to make them circular here as well. Same goes for the deflector dish cover: angular covers were not an option, but an iris system works like a charm.

I'm still doubting about what to do with the side pods, though. Leave them as is (a little bit oval) or revert back to the original cylindrical shape? And I'm not going to include that awkward swivel torpedo launcher; regular tubes (though a lot of them) will do just fine. The main shuttlebay is a real beast right now, by the way. It'll fit lots of shuttles :-D I'm not going for traditional clamshell doors here. They're a pain to work out how the f*ck they actually slide over one another while keeping it all airtight, so a set of sliding doors (like on a Daedalus) will provide access to the shuttlebay.

That bridge is an ongoing work in progress, even more so than the main ship. There was some talk about the Discovery and that green glass in the bottom when someone suggested it could be akin to the Vengeance's old concept art with the split command deck. I found that very interesting and decided to do such a thing here, which fits Marcus's megalomaniac character of looking down upon everyone else. I'm going to put a ring of VIP quarters around it and a briefing room in the aft. Or maybe that's going to be Marcus' ready room. Because I want to add an NX's plotting table to the front (where you'd normally find the conn and viewscreen, same spot from which the second render is made), as a throwback to his fondness for old stuff. I haven't been able to find reliable plans of that table yet, though, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Impressive stuff! I think it's a much more coherent and logical design than the original monstrosity.
I know the nacelle pylons have that distinctive wing-like kink, but to me it just seems odd - less so, in your take, but still odd. Oh, and I much prefer the alcove gratings on the bridge than the bars.

On my Triumphant-class ships, which were built specifically to be fleet command ships, I have a configuration somewhat like your bridge, except that the upper deck is a full flag deck, and the lower deck still has the ship's bridge. The idea being that the flag deck has all of the displays, officers, and controls necessary to oversee the *fleet*, while the lower deck controls the ship - but the Admiral can still call orders directly over the railing if desired, too.

I suck at art, and that bridge exists only in my head - but your bridge reminded me of it, sort of. So feel free to steal as much or as little of the concept as you'd like. :) I get that you're trying to recreate a specific ship, but you're already changing some things to make them make more sense, too, so... ;)

I really like this design you have come up with!

One thought- perhaps you could 'armor-up' the nacelles some. Right now they appear to be larger versions of the standard configuration- adding some slotted plates over the inboard hardware and maybe something to protect the bussard domes...

One thing about the NuTrek Vengeance- it looked like it could take a hit anywhere and just keep on going

Yeah, the gull wings make her a bit odd. But I added some plasma exhausts to the bottom to even them out just a little bit. It's not much, but they're there.

I had a similar idea a while back, even going as far as to having a semi transparent MSD going from command floor on top to the bridge one level lower. The Vengeance was never intended as a fleet command vessel though, so for now I'm skipping adding a command deck. For now...

Looking good bro. You got any more views of her?
They'll be coming up. I'm busy planting phaser turrets all around the hull and when that's done, I'll update the render!

That has been an issue yeah. I'm not really sure how to add armor plating while still keeping it rooted in TOS :-/ I tried putting stuff "over" the cylinders but that didn't give a big enough visual identification on it being armored; it just looked fat. The bussards are likewise a problem. I added those plates on the top and side to give it that TOS look while still doing something along the lines of armoring.

Yeah, she kills stuff pretty good with all those weapons

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Interesting project! Nice Gallery too!
Now I have to check those other threads you mentioned!
And I totally get you on the sizing issue! It was the one thing I hated the most about the reboot! Throughout the year (2009), something like A Dozen Official, Contradictory sizes where disseminated for the Alt-Constitution-class, that had it at 500m, 700m to 1500m! with many stops in between, but trying to make it a Star Destroyer was the stupidest, and rudest slap in the face.

Have you seen Bernd Schneider's article on the Monsterprise at Ex Astris Scientia? If you haven't I highly recommend it!
He shows quite Clearly how the Alt-Enterprise was designed and scaled as a 366m long ship, why the blunder of supersizing it. and how the Vengeance would fit as a roughly 750m-long vessel. Those are sizes I can accept.
They work and fits the era far better.
The Vengeance is basically their Excelsior, beefed up and so advanced it literally is a next-generation warship.

Again, sweet model!
Thank You!

Ah, always nice when a competition ends. Time for an update!

I'm trying to beef up the nacelles even more but work is slow and I'm not sure if I'll even go there. In the meantime I've added a grille to the impulse engine (I love the grilling) and some navigation lights. I'll have to see where I go from here...

I've read it yeah, and Bernd is, as with a lot of things, spot on. But I've got the feeling somewhere down the road this size problem is going to be fixed.

I hope...
