TOS-TNG-DS9 and Why They Fit Together Nicely

Recently I got Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine complete series sets on DVD to go with my Star Trek: The Original Series (or just "Star Trek" as some of you TOS-only Luddites insist on :D) DVDs, and have been just thrilled with how well these 3 shows just "click" together for the most part in their own way. It's sort of a trilogy in my eyes.

I mean if you watch DS9's "Emissary" and "Trials and Tribble-ations" back-to-back you'll see what I mean, the 3 Trekkian universes just blend in so well together with a little imagination and dramatic flair on the part of the DS9 writers.

I think why these 3 shows do that is that while they are distinctly different from each other they were made with loving care by dedicated people who really "got it". Sure neither TOS, TNG, or DS9 were perfect (despite some hardliners may say), but even in their lesser episodes, there was a sense of spontenaity and experimentation rather than tiredly going-through-the-motions like UPN Trek.

What say you all? I'm sure I'll hear from the TOS-only crowd along with TOS-DS9 chic movement--disregarding TNG's contribution to the franchise. (Come on TNG fans speak out for your favorite show! I know you're out there!) And there are those that are a fan of all 5 shows (and that's cool, I suppose). But I want to know:

Are there any fans of this "Trekkian Trilogy" or am I whistling in the dark?

I've always liked "The Big Three". TNG may have had the least interesting characters of them, but its still a favorite of mine.

Also to the doubters: watch TOS's "The City on the Edge of Forever"; TNG's "Yesterday's Enterprise"; and DS9's "The Visitor".

Are there any Trek Time Travel stories that pack any more of an emotional punch? I think not.

And for reoccuring antagonists, it doesn't get much better than Khan Noonien Singh, Q, and Gul Dukat. (I mean Maj Culluh and Sillik are wusses in comparison).

I'm in complete agreement. I've always been a TOS-TNG-DS9 fan, I consider them all great shows for different reasons. Their diversity compliments each other quite well.

they all, in their own ways, blazed new trails on television and did things that no show had done before, and maintained a high level of quality (despite the occasionaly dud) while doing so. the other two Trek serieses did neither.

Indeed that is what I shall do.

I fail to see any attributes of TNG that put TNG on par with either TOS or DS9; or that put TNG all that much above either ENT or VOY.

More like TOS-DS9 are two peas in a pod, and TNG-VOY-ENT are three peas in a completely different pod.

I'm more than happy to post more reasons! :D :D :D

And Voyager and Enterprise can *not* even touch The Next Generation--as much as they try. To say otherwise invites this: :guffaw: from me.

For years I adored TNG, it took me through the 80s and the 90s and meant a great deal to me for a great many reasons. TOS I will always love because it's been there forever and it just is. DS9 I enjoyed greatly during its run. I was never passion about it but I can appreciate it and I can see why it has its many fans.

More like VOY and ENT are consciously derivative of TNG, which happened to neither TOS or DS9.

DS9, however, grew very organically out of TNG - featuring two TNG characters, a number of recurring ones, numerous aliens that had been established on TNG... so I'd say it's actually closer to TNG than VOY or ENT was, both for those reasons and the only reason that counts: Quality. ;)

TOS-TNG-DS9: the Big Three, agree 100%. Those are the Treks I LOVE. VOY and ENT I like...the majority of the time. UPN Trek is simply not in the same class as the Big Three.

Well for me TOS and DS9 are out in front, but TNG isn't too far behind, and is certainly well ahead of Voy and Ent.

TNG has probably dated more than any other Trek show, and by god there were some woeful episodes, but when they got it right they made some of the best Trek episodes ever, so I'll always love it :bolian:

very true.

and the characters are brilliant when in the hands of great writers like some of the current authors - KRAD, Ward and Dilmore, Mack, and Greenburger, I'm looking at you.

Yes.

Yep. The elements that made me not like TNG as well as TOS or DS9 were, horribly enough, magnified and expanded upon in VOY and the first three seasons of ENT. But S4 of ENT was more like TOS-DS9.

Ah, but those are not really reasons so much as they are a laundry list of episodes that still do not demonstrate what attributes TNG has that puts it on par with either TOS or DS9.

Besides that, many of the episodes on that list are terribly awful! :guffaw: Ie: "The Host", "The Outcast", "I, Borg".
