I was just at a site that had LOST IN SPACE wallpaper (don't ask) and spotted this newsbit-

Trek Score Will Keep Theme
Michael Giacchino, who is set to compose the score for J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek movie, told SCI FI Wire that he will retain at least the original theme music from the original series, by Alexander Courage., 2007-10-31, 22:00:00

I don't know if this is old news, or how reliable it is (haven't checked scifwire myself), but it was the first I'd heard, so figured I'd share.

Only if Gene's lyrics are used, damnit!

Maybe Scotty can be singing it to himself or something.

It's good news. I'm looking forward to a new take on Trek, musically, but I want to hear some of the old musical touchstones included. The main theme and the fanfare are as iconic as the ship and Spock's ears. The people making this film on every level seem to have a real respect for TOS and what made Trek Trek back in the day.

Oh, the somber bass of Spock's theme... can't wait.

And for a hand-to-hand combat sequence to use the classic Amok Time incidental music...

These guys are going to catch lightning in the bottle again....

Well, as I read it on trekmovie.com, I think he meant he'd use at least the fanfare. Which I think we'd all agree had about a 99.44% chance of happening.

As far as singing the lyrics to "Gene's" theme goes, it's obvious that the person who should sing it is Carol Marcus. Just after Kirk leaves her. She stares off into the night sky and starts, "Beyond the rim of ...."
It'd be a show-stopping, heartwreching moment. Then, cut to Kirk hitting on his first alien babe.

A good composer--and The Incredibles has shown us that this guy is very good indeed--can weave the old motifs into a new composition. That he's using Courage's work (and hopefully Kaplan's and Fried's as well) is a good sign.

Using the Amok Time fight music would be a great big slice of American cheese... but I'd love it if they worked it in there somewhere.

Since we already have a thread on this topic I will close this one for duplication.
The conversation can continue here.
:)
