TOS Suggestions

So far I've only read 24th century Berman-era trek books and have not done much reseach on TOS books. In my TOS read list, I only have Ex Machina, Probe (and Music of the Spheres), and maybe Crucible. Can anyone recommend some other really good TOS books? I feel I'm more interested in reading books that take place during the tos movies but I'm open to all suggestions.

I would highly recommend Spock's World - it's been near the top of my favourite Trek books list since I first read it. A fascinating history of the Vulcan people, and an intriguing present-day (post-TMP) plot.

Good choices, you already picked some highlights.
Some other suggestions:

Constellations (40th Anniversary Anthology)
Burning Dreams (Captain Pike)
Sarek
Forged in Fire (Hikaru Sulu and the Excelsior)
The Captain's Daughter (Demora Sulu)
Federation (Zefram Cochrane)

The entire Eugenics Wars-Series about Khan Noonien Sing is also really good.

And one "must read" in that Era is of course the TOS-Spin-Off "Vanguard", the three books that have been published so far are definetly among the best Trek-books ever (And very few would disagree with me here, be assured of that)

Oh yes, definitely looking forward to Vanguard. Just need to finish off a few books first.

The Ashes of Eden is a great standalone book by Shatner, and it's set post-The Undiscovered Country.

Are you sure about that last sentence? Don't get me wrong, I liked the books well enough, and would recommend them, too, but I wouldn't say they are even near "the best Trek-Books ever". :vulcan:

Anyway, one book which I feel isn't mentioned often whenever this topic comes up and is my favorite TOS book is In the Name of Honor by Dayton Ward.

'Star Trek: The New Voyages'

It has about 8 short stories with introductions to each of them written by cast and crew

I absolutely love the cover art :D

Some of my favorites:

The Entropy Effect
Black Fire
Uhura's Song
Ishmael
Yesterday's Son

Yep, those are all kind of old and a lot of the newer ones have been very good, particularly Provenance of Shadows, but I think all of the above are excellent.

I second this, a very interesting read. Not much action as such but it practically builds a lot on Vulcan society from ancient times when they couldnt even speak to the time of TOS... mind you this was before Enterprise came out so none of that Kir'Shara stuff in there but still was a nice insight on Vulcan society.

In addition to seconding many of the above, I would recommend Crisis On Centaurus and the Lost Years tetralogy.

Prime Directive, In the Name of Honor, Prime Directive, Burning Dreams, Prime Directive, the Vanguard series, Prime Directive, Sarek and... did i mention Prime Directive?

Strangers From the Sky, Doctor's Orders, and the Rihannsu books, especially My Enemy, My Ally and The Romulan Way.

I'd like to second the reccomendation for Strangers from the Sky, and FYI it takes place in three different eras Post-TMP, Pre-Where No Man Has Gone Before Kirk, and mid 21st Century. It's also a little inconsistant with First Contact.

It depends on what kind of books you like. If it were me I'd start off with Prime Directive because it has plenty of action as well as great character moments. Strangers From the Sky is also a good book to start off with for the same reasons. If you like world building then you should go for Spock's World, Diane Duane's Romulan books ("My Enemy, My Ally", "The Romulan Way", etc.) or The Final Reflection (I just read it again for the first time in 20 years and I had forgotten how excellent it really is.) If you like character-driven books then you can't go wrong with Burning Dreams or the Crucible trilogy. I will add that Crucible: McCoy is the finest Trek novel I've read in years. There are all kinds of other excellent TOS books to choose from, just a few of which are:
The Wounded Sky
The Entropy Effect
Sarek
Federation
Ashes of Eden
Star Trek III (much better than the movie)
The Lost Years
Ex Machina

I really liked that book a lot, but I'm curious how well it would stand up today for someone who's used to the Trek novels we get these days. This is, after all, a collection of fanfic rather than professionally-written fiction, and it's from a time when the only filmed Star Trek in existence was the original TV series and the animated TV series and there only two original Star Trek novels had ever been published. It's a product of a different world.

I absolutely love the cover art :D
Hey, that's my scan of my copy of the book! They don't make 'em like that any more. Well, except for the cover of the Constellations anthology, which recaptures the look of the 1970s Bantam books.
