I have the original release 3 dvd set, and i was wondering if it's worth it to buy the remastered set? Pro's? Con's?

That reminds me of the joke about the prison baseball team. Some of the players were pros, but the others were all cons.

If you want to see what actually aired untainted by the advance in CGI, then by all means, do so.

Some claim that's like putting a moustache on the Mona Lisa. I'm not one of them. I bought all three DVDs from Amazon for Christmas because most of the things they had to combat the shorter length episodes have to be. That was my biggest complaint with the remastered shows. From what I've heard, all the footage is back in the disk.

Of course, the computer digitalization also enhanced the regular footage.

One of my favorites regarding the CGI effects is "Doomsday Machine." Remember the Enterprise going in a straight line with obviously drawn-in phaserd? The new version has the Enterprise ducking and swooping as it fires on the Machine.

This doesn't make any poor episodes any better, just like it doesn't make the classics less interesting. But I LIKE IT, I LIKE IT.

Pro -- Remastered video in high definition

Con -- You don't see it in high definition if you get the DVD rather than the blu-ray.

Pro -- Cool new special effects.

Con -- Cool new special effects.

I'm waiting for the blu-ray to come out in April. Not only will you get HD picture, but you get both the original and remastered episodes.

It was worth it to me.

I enjoy the new CGI but I also enjoy and appreciate the original effort of the original creators.

However, I do not like the difficult-to-use packaging of either set. WHY, oh why do they do that??

Anyway, go ahead and buy 'em! You won't regret it. It's TOS for heaven's sake! No error there. ;)

I am happy to wait for the new set at this point. Getting both the remastered and the original in the same set sells me.

I'm through about 30 episodes of the remastered series, and even though only some of them are true HD (on my HD-DVD player), they still look light years better than the old episodes. I actually ran a few side by side comparisons, its pretty dramatic! There are no cons unless you MUST have the old ones for completion sake, and the blu-ray set will have both. For myself I don't plan on having any of the old copies around at some point.

Much as I enjoy the TOS-R prints and happily admit that a couple of episodes are actually better with the new effects, I will always watch the original versions. It doesn't matter what changes are made, I always prefer the versions I've always watched. I'm not so hung up on the differences between the DVD prints and the HD prints that watching a "lesser" version bothers me.

While I find the redone Doomsday Machine more exciting now, I find that I still want to watch the old, crappy AMT model kit scenes. I enjoy some of the ingenuity of the effects, considering the lack of funds and technology back then. Besides, that's how the shows were made, that's the way I fell in love with them and that's the way I want to be able to see them. This is why I'm ecstatic that the original mono soundtracks will finally be provided. No fake surround sound effects and music substitutions. The integrity of the original remains.

But the TOS-R versions are good also, and I watch them at times as well, when the effects impact the story. Like Tomorrow Is Yesterday - outstanding. But episodes like Charlie X or Miri? Meh, the originals are just fine. And the picture quality between the prints isn't THAT different. The standard DVD prints look great on my 56 inch HDTV.

Unless you are firmly in one camp over the other, I say wait for the new sets and have your cake and eat it too.

Could I just ask, are the extras on the Region 2 slipcase box sets of the various series including TOSR the same as on the clamshell box sets?

I think you should save your money.

To me I have the set that's really worth a damn.

Did we really need new effects because some 14 year olds don't like it?

No you needed them because TOS looks like horseshit, eaten by a horse then vomited back up and mixed with horse diarrhea in a Kitchen Aid blender then eaten by my cat, and then coughed up with his furballs... on a Kaiser roll.

They should have done more than they did like putting actual graphics on the screens on the bridge to replace the paper ones and they should have digitally filled in the backgrounds on the "planets" they landed on so that it actually looked like a planet and not a soundstage.

I love TOS but it looks awful and I knew this when I was 5 (in 1980).

I watched one of the VHS (not DVD)copies I had compared to the HD-DVD...there seemed to be a fog in the VHS version. We really watched these episodes that way? Pretty amazing.

Rama, if you really want to have fun just watch the trailer (which weren't remastered) immediately following the remastered episode.

I'm watching the original series right now on the regular DVD sets on an HD TV. The effects still look fine. All that was needed was a major cleaning, and aspect ratio change.

I agree w/ what you wrote about a cleaning, but..."Aspect ratio change?" Do you want them to crop the picture so it fits your 16:9 TV, or do you want to see the whole picture the way it was intended?

Doug

To change the aspect ratio to wider, they should re-film just the edges. Shouldn't be too hard since the actors were usually in the middle of the screen. Then someone can jiggle the film about so it matches up with the middle portion. Note: this is a joke.

Ah, finally! I see they've abandoned the old cases and have started anew with the Blu-ray packaging. A messy situation for retailers, but at least they're finalised now and these are priced reasonably (and won't fall apart).
I wonder if these DVDs will have the seamless branching like the Blu-ray versions.

On a 24 inch cathode ray tube TV, they still look okay, but the lack of detail is pretty obvious now. The Laserdiscs hold up better when seen on a regular TV. actually, the mind does a lot of justifying. I pulled out some old VHS recordings of had of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, not Columbia House, but fan transfers from 16mm and some TV prints. Back then, I was fine with the quality since it was the best I was likely to find. Now that the series has been totally restored to HD quality, those tapes are unwatchable.

Although, I do admit nostalgia can do a lot too. I popped in one of those REALLY old Trek VHS tapes, the pre-full series releases from the 80's (two episode tapes - sort of a "best of" thing). These were also pre-85 remastering and of the same washed out, well-worn quality of the syndicated prints. Nostalgically, I loved it! It was like watching them on WPIX (only uncut) again.

But I wouldn't want that to be my only choice to view.

I'm sorry but your horseshit spew really doesn't sound something like a Trek fan would say! I'm shocked that you think TOS looks awful instead of appreciating the ingenuity that it took to make these "awful" effects. I find them quite well done (most of them) and my 13yr old nephew doesn't think they are crappy...the old stinky star treks are just fine for him!
