TOS-R Bread and Circuses: A Review

4 hours ago, I watched the episode on FOX. It was cool.

Granted it was on a CRT TV (no it wasn't gray scale, no it wasn't sephia, it was Full Spectrum), and we don't get cable channels through the satellite anymore, so the picture was out of focus a little (a la Youtube), but it was still cool.

I finally got to see a TOS-R Remastered episode. :thumbsup:

I saw Kirk, Spock, and Bones beam down.

I missed the intro :Sob:.

I haven't seen this episode since it was rerun in the 70's, so it was new for me.

During the commercial I could swear I saw a TOS-R CGI Enterprise.

Naaaaaaaaaaah.

Then, exterior shot of Enterprise orbiting the planet.

CGI yumm!

Scotty gives the log entry, and we cut to a shot of the viewscreen looking upon the planet and moons.

CGI Ymm!

The CGI didn't distract from the plot, setting nor characters.

Then Enterprise moves away from the planet.

The episode was over.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaa!

I finally played Star Trek: Legacy. I've watched the new episodes of New Voyages, and Starship Farrugat. Also, I've seen Adam Turner's take.

So, I still wish TOS-R had more stuff on the Enterprise model, and did the warp effect (exterior and interior warp bubble shots) a la the above shows.

But...

I can't wait til next week! Neither can my mum "I don't like science fiction".

There were bullet holes added in the scene near the end, where our heroes beam out of the jail cell.

I hate the "son of god" ending...not for the Christian parallel, but the absurd statement that the planet's Roman empire will somehow end due to christianity. That DID NOT HAPPEN ON EARTH. Religion had almost nothing to do with Rome's fall. The Empire became increasingly christian and certainly did not dissolve because of that. (Indeed, the christian eastern empire lingered until the 15th century!) What kind of history where Kirk and Company taught?

Never mind, how many died in the name of "peace and brotherhood" of the followers of "the Son" on Earth. Seems like that planet's history will probably be bloodier under the Son than the Pax Romana they presently enjoyed.

Just fucking stupid. Should've just left it as, they had Christ, too...and not spout some revisionist happy-feelly lie.

Also, when guards drop their submachine guns to attack you with swords, and you have a submachine gun...shoot the bastards.

Ok, as I brought up in an earlier thread, this is one thing that has always bugged me about B&C:

Kirk is informed that the Pronconsul "knows who and what we are". He clearly does, having heard of Vulcans, communicators, starfleet etc.

And yet, Kirk says to Merrick something like "when your crew beam-came ashore..."

I know he wants to be all down with the PD, but it seems silly to stumble and correct himself about beaming when clearly there's no reason to.

I'm just glad they put bullet holes in the wall of the cell after they beam to safety. That snafu bugged the crap out of and annoyed me since I was old enough to remember.

You have no idea how difficult it is to keep from commenting on this. As for B&C, I agree with you though. The bullet holes were a nice addition.

Arguably, THE thing that needed fixing in the episode more than anything else.

When I noticed the new bullet holes I laughed out... it had always bugged me!

And at least the new CGI holes looked realistic. They weren't too dark and didn't stand out too badly against the original 1967 studio set.
