I know some TOS fans don't like the kelvinverse and some TOS fans, who were willing to give the kelvin verse a chance completely lost faith in it after star trek into darkness, but I have to ask. what did you think of this scene in star trek beyond as a TOS fan?

As a TOS fan, what were your feelings.

I loved it personally and thought it was perfect. a perfect way to do a tribute compared to into darkness with spock screaming khan instead of kirk. yiesh.

A lovely tribute to Leonard Nimoy, exemplified by Zachary Quinto's Spock reminiscning.

Cool looking set, too - the designers had the knack.

The fact it's in BEYOND, IMHO the best 21st century Trek movie of the bunch, doesn't hurt either.

And it's a cast photo from TFF - one of the few solid things from a movie with much potential but stumbled (and not all due to William Shatner, who is often unfairly scapegoated.)

I'm curious as to why one would vote '1'. It's possible to fathom a couple ideas, but is that due to the scene or by other factors and the scene is getting the unfair brunt?

I am not a TOS purist, but I do like TOS. And I liked this scene. And most of the rest of the movie too.

I don't know what a "TOS purist" is to be honest.

I love TOS, to the point where it is far-and-away unwaveringly my favorite version of Star Trek (seasons 1-3 and the 6 films).

But, I don't hold other elements of the franchise in contempt for disrespecting or "ruining" TOS because they dare to do something different or even because they demonstrate continuity changes. That's a ridiculous position to take with a 56 year old science fiction franchise.

To answer the question, I thought it was a wonderful little nod. I wish BEY had been a more memorable film, but this scene was gold.

I thought for a film that came together so quickly, Star Trek Beyond really checked all the boxes for what I wanted in the film. As for this scene, I Know it doesn't make a ton of sense for Prime Spock to have this picture, but he could have had it created "somehow." What I loved was that it was not only a great tribute to the cast, it legitimized the least popular film in the Original Series run. I was grinning when I first saw the choice of picture.

I'm actually curious as to how "purist" is being used in this context. I consider myself a purist in that I prefer to watch the original series with the original effects and the NBC broadcast sound mix (or - at the very least - the 1980's - 1999 sound mix). No alterations to make the episodes work best on an HDTV or 7.1 surround sound home theater set up. As it was shot and made for first run airing.

So the term doesn't mean anything to me in this particular context.

I'm no "purist," but how can anyone not find this moment touching?

Eh... I find lot of movies in the past decade or two to be very formulaic; it's like they all have a similar checklist to go down, including obligatory sentimental/nostalgic moments that come across to me as forced. I don't feel like they really flow from the characters or story, it's just "box checked." And so with this scene.
