TOS "proto-remaster"

Sry for being a tad late on things but for those really curious, I did comparison shots between the JPLD and 1993 VHS print of Assignment: Earth. LD left, VHS right. Forgive the quality of my VHS rip, this was back in February of 2024, when I still primarily used a cheap Funai-made VCR (I currently use either a Sharp VC-H810, RCA VF-531, or a Toshiba model as of 2026, and they give me slightly better results both visually and audibly).

Right side has too much compression artifacting despite additional sharpness (but the two effectively cancel each other out as compression artifacting adds a weird emboss effect along with the blech-inducing blotching, the left side is softer but more pleasing in that area...) But contrast looks great since outer space is black and not a charcoal-gray, not to mention Earth is supposed to have bluish water and not teal that the left side is borderline approximating, partly due to the charcoal-gray color casting. Plus, the compression makes the text look blotchy. I'm pretty certain the title is supposed to be more yellow than peach from either side.

As for sharpness, really close inspection of the collar on the right reveals some semblance of the same striping on the left but subdued (MPEG2 compression?), how many episodes were crammed into that DVD disc?
If it's the official set, 4. Dual layer discs. But also including special features, but not that many.

The 1999 edition had 2 episodes her single layer disc and no special features other than the episodic previews.
