TOS Communicators

Photographs and "on screen footage" aside, are there any definitive schematics in existence for the flip-top talkie Starfleet-issue communicators seen in the TOS series?

IIRC, there were two general types of Starfleet talkies seen in TOS:

1: the larger, "see thru" model, as seen in "The Cage", "Where No Man Has Gone Before", and "Cage" footage used in "The Menagerie".

2: the more common, streamlined gold-on-black model used throughout the rest of TOS.

Was it as simple as two models? If so, were all the communicators used all made to look exactly the same?

What about the seemingly universally familiar activation "chirp" and the other "ringing" sound effects? Does anyone know how they were created?
