TOS Combat

When was the last time you watched Combat (w/Vic Morrow)? I rewatched all 5 seasons this past year and was utterly amazed at how many Trek actors did that show as well... from Balance of Power's Decius to the old man in The Deadly Years. Nimoy played prominently in a couple of episodes. And if you can avoid blinking, you'll see Walter Koenig with Shecky Greene. Etc, etc, etc. It's like watching a series of Star Trek pre-reunions! (..and how many times have you seen a "pre-reunion?!?" Should I trademark that word? *grin*)

Jeff Hunter was a tanker in a first season ep too.

I'm getting the same effect watching Mission Impossible and Hawaii 5-0. (The worst casting ever was Mark Lenard as an old Japanese soldier in 5-0). Those actors sure got plenty of work back then.

Yes, Hunter was a shell-shocked tanker! MI was good for the bigger "name" TOS guest stars, but I think Combat wins for all those background guests I only recognize because I've seen them 5 million times per episode of Trek. I could never get into 5-0, but I surely believe you on everybody doing the rounds there. Those were the days when all actors pretty much did all TV shows. Easy to forget until you start rewatching the old shows!

I've never seen the episode you refer to, but I can picture Mark Lenard in that role. In my mind, a combination of Sarek and every bad WWII movie-like impersonation of a then-stereotype... am I close?

However, Mark Lenard was always Aaron Stemple to me as well. As much as he was a Romulan who also sired Spock. (not to mention the guy who taught me my first Klingon word (fire!).

He taught me the Klingon for "evasive!" as well
But after learning "fire," should there be any need to even learn "evasive?" hehe

He wore incredibley fake-looking false epicanthic eyepieces, and delivered his dialog like he was doing the "noble savage" red Indian stereotype. Plus he was trying to do cool-looking martial arts moves which he obnviously didn't know how to do, and his rather stocky build make look silly. it was truly aweful.

However, in another episode, Barbara Luna guest starred and spent a lot of camera time in a bikini. So that made up for it. :D

In re-union territory, there's a number of TOS actors in Alias Smith And Jones including Mark Lenard, Diana Muldaur and William Windom - and the story for one of the episodes was written by Gene Roddenberry.

The rare, never seen, WWII illusion scen from The Cage...

Capt Pike is made to believe he's a tank driver who meets Sgt Saunders and a beautiful young French refugee:

While checking out a French farm house, Pike's strong-willed attempts to break out of the illusion cause the Talosians to confuse one illusion with another:

Is he a tanker in France? Or is this Rigel again?!

Spock senses his captain's peril, and calls out to him telepathicly:

It fades. He's back in the cage...
