There's another thread devoted to the same topic. If it wouldn't be too much to ask, can the moderators merge the two threads?

Ugh! Lieutenant Spock? They may as well have called him Dr. Spock.

The ships not only have the main deflector, but they also have navigational shields, running at all times, protecting them not only from hydrogen and other atomic-sized matter, but also from asteroids, meteoroids, comets and other space junk of varying mass. This does not include the main shields that are used in combat. Riker even mentioned the nav-shields in "The Outrageous Okona" (a less-than-good ep but still introduced the concept) when he said "Lasers can't even penetrate our navigation shields. Don't they know that?". The TAS episode "Beyond the Farthest Star" also has a reference to nav shields.

This quasi-intellectual burnout should find a new job if his research skills are this abysmal, especially when commenting on a science fiction show where all the scripts are available online and there are tons of technical reading materials on the subject if he had bothered to read them. Aren't scientists supposed to think about what we could do, and not what we can't? How would we ever evolve and advance as a species with this kind of insipidly backward thinking? Methinks someone is hurting for a grant.

Fail.

Rant over.
